Re: NBA 2K4 Video @ IGN
I couldn't get it to work as a link so just type (or copy) this. It might take a little longer and you can't save the video.
I repeat: do not click as a link, type in the url and hit enterToday I realized something. I'm a clown. A class clown... and it sickens me. - Bart Simpson (The Simpsons)Comment

Re: NBA 2K4 Video @ IGN
Not impressed. It seems just like NBA 2k3, IMHO. I hope they've finally implemented a midrange game where teams run their plays and their players play to their strengths. If not, then nothing has changed as far as I'm concerned. The lack of a midrange game is its biggest flaw and it has been a problem for a while now. They need to fix that above everything else.Comment

Re: NBA 2K4 Video @ IGN
Alright, I know its early so I'm not too disappointed. I can see that Sega has already done a lot of improvements, such as the dunks and player body models. The Kobe turnaround thing looks tight, and I'm hoping the other shooting animations are up to par with that one.
However, if you watch it carefully you can see the players' turn around kinda weird. Look at the beginning of the video and you'll see Jason Kidd going in one direction, turn around in like a circle and run the other direction (no momentum shift, just keeps running) to get by his defender. He then goes into a 360º pass to KMart in traffic. I didn't like the turnaround thing Jason did and I didn't like how he threw a fancy pass in traffic.
Right after that, the Piston (I think Ben Wallace) throws a no-look fancy pass to the player out of bounds so he could pass it in. Unnecessary. Fancy stuff should only be done on breakaways or when the defense dictates the player to do so.
Jason Kidd's behind the back pass to Dikembe wasn't necessary nor was the defender dictating that pass to be that way. Then the defender goes up for a block from behind, but jumping backwards while doing so. I really hope they fix the blocking animations. The players still look stiff and like they're only trying to jump straight up for blocks (from what we've seen in this 30 second or so video). The attempted swats look better though, but still not too realistic in terms of where they are swinging for the block.
When Kobe's about to post up TMac, you can kinda see them doing the weird circle turnaround thing also. And then when TMac gets an open lane (horrible defensive AI), he does a really fancy two handed backhand dunk while pushing Shaq back! Realistically, TMac shoulda fumbled the ball or had to throw up a circus shot.
I think they're more than likely going to clean up that circle thing that Kobe and Jason Kidd did in the video, but I have other complaints. I hate to sound like a broken record, but the running animations still look very robotic. They look stiff and straight up while running. And when Richard Hamilton does that wild turbo crossover spin, he just bumps off the defender still. I was hoping they'd do a little more realistic contact collision and animations for NBA 2K4.
Nothing really looks all that intense either, and the NBA is a very intense sport. Look at the jumpball for instance. Once it's tipped, only Jason Kidd moves to grab it. And look when Kobe's posting up TMac, you can see Pat Burke and Shaq I think trying to get to the same spot, but in doing so they are just sidestepping in place.
I know I saw lots of bad, but I'm still impressed with the early video. I'm just hoping that Sega Sports sees some of these little tidbits and cleans them up. Add a slide animation or something so players don't run in place. Make players show emotion during closeups. Have defenders always swatting for the ball on steals and passes. Things like that.
Sorry if I pissed anyone off by downtalking the early 2K4. It's just my opinion. Oh and sorry for the long read, but I just wanted to get it all out. I still have high expectations no matter what, and I want Sega to deliver!Comment
