The greatest marketing campaign in the history of sports.

MJ WAS the NBA in the 90's so obviously most people (under 25 anyway) would consider him to be the greatest. Old guys who saw Wilt, Russell etc say they are the greatest......My point (and HM Mcoy's i think): people's perception of greatness is directley related to how long ago they retired and how fresh they are in our minds. That is why kids today are saying things like Kobe is the best player in the history of the nba and next year people will be saying LeBron James is the best player in the world because they are marketed so effectively. Hope that made sense.

the most memorable kareem game in my mind and most others is the one he sat out in the 1980 finals and they won anyway to clinch the title.

I am soooooo tired of hearing how Michael Jordan will always be the greatest of all time and that no one will EVER be be better. Guess what. There will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be someone better. Just ask Kareem. With all of his many, many accomplishments who would have ever thought someone could possibly be better? Better than a SIX......TIME........MVP?!!! With the most dominating, completely unstoppable offensive move in NBA history? Kareem was just as popular in his day as MJ was in his, just as much a international celebrity, just as dominant. To a hardcore Jabaar fan, the only thing MJ had over Kareem is flashier offense (that boy aint nothin' but a showoff) , more TV exposure and his own shoe.

But just 10 years later, MJ is now the G.O.A.T.

But so did Mikan in his era, Wilt in his era, Russell in his era.....the list goes on.

Bottom line: Mikan fans didn't like it, but he got over-shadowed. Wilt and Russell fans didn't like it, but they got overshadowed. Any one who thinks that MJ won't EVER be overshadowed is just a hopeless fanboy........

Yeah it's always funny to see people unequivocally say stuff like "MJ is the greatest player of all time" when all that it can really come down too is personal opinion but people say it as fact. Also there is no way to tell who the best player of all time is because who knows who is coming down the track. Maybe in 2013 a 7'8 point guard from Australia will score 75 ppg while averaging 17 assists per and lead his team to 12 consecutive titles, well maybe not but you get the point.

It's one thing when people from this generation proclaim MJ as the G.O.A.T., but it's another when guys like Jack Ramsay, Fred Carter, Bill Russel, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Pat Riley, etc...all proclaim MJ the G.O.A.T. Last time I checked, none are under 25.
