Kobe was the second option on the Lakers dynasty teams, but there is no way the lakers would have won all of those without him.

It's interesting that so many people believe that Shaq will always be a laker. I don't agree with that line of thinking at all.

Jordan may have ended his career in Washington. But he will always be remembered as a Bull, because he spent most of his career in Chicago. Same goes for people like Scottie Pippen, Olajuwan, etc.

But Shaq's career is different altogether. While he earned 3 titles in L.A., many of his other achievements came outside the city. His meteoric rise to stardom came in Orlando, loooong before he ever donned a Laker uniform. He already made a name for himself before he bolted for L.A. He has made a number of NBA Finals apperances with teams other than the Lakers. Most importantly, the Shaq has spent the majority of his career with teams other than the Lakers.

I don't think it would be right for the Lakers to retire the number of a player who spent most of his career playing for other teams. It diminishes the meaning of the gesture.

There is no question he will be remembered as a Laker...although when I think about Shaq at his most dominant I think of his last year in Orlando. I'm not saying that's when he was his best, but that's the illest Shaq to me, lol.
