Can't the Mavs pick up Malone with the mid-level exception? That's assuming Malone will take a pay cut that big. Then, the Mavs could hold on to all of their players. They don't really care about the salary cap, or even the luxury tax for that matter. Cuban has $$$ coming out of bung hole.

Uuuhhhmm, Malone is looking for an instant championship team, not a future team. Or a team that needs major overhaul on the frontline.

The Mavs did get to the Western Conference Finals, sure, we probably needed those injuries to get that far but we got Spurs to go 6, just like the Lakers. Do I think they need a major overhaul in the frontline? Yes, they do. If Raef could play in Game 6 like that all year, we would only be talking about how ineffective Bradley is.

Well, seems to me that the Mavs are pretty close to that championship level. They did beat the Kings, even tho they were Webber-less. And they did also get to the WCF and push it to 6 games, when many thought they were done in 5.

The only instant champion teams out there are the Lakers, Kings, Spurs, and Mavs. And out of those teams, I think the Lakers and Mavs will probably suit Malone better. Malone is looking for that scoring title too, so playing with 3/4 potent scorers in the Mavs won't really work too well for that goal. And playing with Kobe/Shaq isn't going to be good for that either. It's gonna be a strange off-season, that's for sure. At least this adds some interesting twists this summer. Better than nothing happening.

Re: Mailman going to the Mavericks?

San Antonio is out if they win the title. I would say the Lakers are number one on his list right, followed by Utah, then a toss up between Sacramento and Dallas. He has already said he would be willing to come off the bench in Sacramento, not to mention Sacramento is more like Salt Lake than any of those other cities. Which believe it or not, is a very big deal to Malone.

All teams SA faced on this playoffs reach Game 6. They are the one who face the most dangerous teams of the WEST.
Also SA's game was very different when they face MAVS. They are more intense during LA and SUNS series.
Of course the referee's on the MAVS series did not allow physical contact that much reason why SA can't play there usual game.
MAVS has not yet earned there championship credibility. Because they failed to close POR and SAC in there weakest form and MAVS strongest form in 5. Lineup that won't last 5 games between LA and SA.
And during the MAVS - SA series, MAVS was playing on there desperate games but not enough to bring SA. They are not a championship team until they passed LA or SA with both teams in there strongest form.
That is what it takes to become a championship team. SAC on the other hand SHAKE the defending champions with both teams on there strongest lineup. Which makes them a threat to the 2 SUPER POWERS (LA and SA).
Even if the MAVS will reach playoffs in next season, they still have to take down SAC's strongest lineup. In other words, before MAVS can be called a championship team, they have to beat first SAC, SA then LA.
But next season, PHX and MIN will be waiting for them because MAVS are not the only one to reach 6 between LA and SA.
It's not if you reach the conference finals you are a championship team, it's how did you reach it. And seeing the lineup of the teams that MAVS has face, makes them a no better team than a 2nd rounder.
Cuban knows it and he knows that what MAVS did this season won't bring them back to the WEST finals again without improvement.
At least the referee was kind enough to take out the physical part of the series or else MAVS is done within 5 games.

Malone would help them add some toughness but they still don't address there main problem on the offensive end which is no low post presence. Defense is a whole nother issue. Would be a fun team to watch tho with the Mailman.

To clarify, Dallas has a $4.5 mid-level exception to offer.

And don't count Dallas out on Jermaine O'Neal. If he'd play a year for that, Cuban will break the bank for him the next year. His history proves that.

O'Neal, it is rumored, isn't enamored about playing a long time in a market like San Antonio. Dallas is already a much higher profile team.

Plus, instead of being Duncan's sidekick, O'Neal can be THE inside game for Dallas. Nowitski will help him on the defensive boards (Dirk finished among the top rebounders in the league), but O'Neal would handle the post-up inside game much like Duncan in San Antonio.

                            It's possible.

You wrote a lot about teams beating the best teams while they are healthy. Well, the Mavs definitely didn't do that this year, but then again, neither has SA. The Mavs caught a Webber-less Kings team, but the Spurs caught a Fox-less and a hurt George Lakers, and a Dirk-less Mavs team.

You can't predict injuries, so a win is a win. Or else, there'll always be an * next to a game.
