Also, is there a limit to how many players the new franchise can pick? Is it 12?

Building of new franchises
I remember reading it on a website somewhere, but I don't remember where it was. It was discussing how new franchises like the Bobcats build their roster. I think it said that each of the 29 teams are allowed to lock up 8 of their players, but any of the others can be selected by a new franchise to join their team. Is that right?
Also, is there a limit to how many players the new franchise can pick? Is it 12?

Re: Building of new franchises
Of course there's a limit, it's not like they are allowed to take 203 players. (7 from each team) It probably is around 14 or 15. -

Re: Building of new franchises
My bad I was meaning to say what is the limit, not if there is a limit. But I'm looking for a more definitive answer on how the whole process works w/ the roster, does anyone know for sure?
B/c I am interested in starting the Charlotte franchise on 2K3. Unfortunately, I will have to get rid of a team like the Cavs or Hawks.
It would also give 2k3 some longevity and perhaps give me a challenge since my team will be a bunch of free agents and scrubs.Comment

Re: Building of new franchises
If I recall correctly (and mind you, I'm not sure that I am), each team may protect eight players. Any other player can be taken in the expansion draft. This guarantees that an expansion team would be able to get at least one or two pretty good (but hardly great) players.
I find it likely that most teams will leave their veteran, declining players unprotected, as well as players who are locked into exorbitant contracts. In the example of my Pacers, this means Austin Croshere.Comment
