No I cant ever see a NBA team in Pittsburgh.
Way too many better choices of bball towns that currently dont have a team.

Steel City should have appreciated the Pythons when they had them.

I was wondering if anyone was old enough to get the reference.

I never saw the film, but I do remember the team from this image. Look at that floor!

Regarding Pittsburgh, they are the the 22nd largest metropolitan area, and for TV purposes, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 89 and Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton is 62. So there may be enough support for a team...

BUT, geographically, there are enough teams nearby that the NBA views the Northeast as pretty saturated. Even at #22 in the United States, Pittsburgh is outranked by Cleveland, Philadelphia, Toronto (Ontario, Canada), New York, New Jersey, Boston, and Washington. Those all have NBA teams, and assuming that population is the main driver, the Northeast is pretty tightly squeezed.

Again looking at population, Pittsburgh would be behind the following cities on the pecking order to get an NBA team:

20.) Tampa Bay / St. Petersburg (although Orlando would certainly prevent this from happening)

              19.) St. Louis

              17.) San Diego

              14.) Seattle

And of course, Las Vegas is trying to land a team.

So even if you and many others would like to see basketball in Pittsburgh, having 3 sports seems to be a pretty good point for them (as well as the Big East for basketball). If every major city deserved 4 sports teams, though, there would be about 55 teams in each league (census areas with more than 1 mil. people) without duplicates for New York, Los Angeles-Anaheim, etc.

Also, of the 21 cities that rank higher than Pittsburgh, only 13 have a team in each of the big 4.

So in my opinion, Pittsburgh doesn't deserve a team. I know that population isn't the only driver (if it were, Green Bay wouldn't have the Packers), and I'm sure that Pittsburgh could support a team, but I don't want to see any expansion or relocation in the foreseeable future for the NBA because it doesn't need it. Maybe move a team back to Seattle, but that's it.

In the meantime, enjoy the Panthers.
