    Myth Busters!

There are certain things that have been said so many times and used so much in arguments that they are regarded as truth, but they are not supported by ACTUAL FACT. I am sure you guys know of some things, and maybe want to get some off your chest? I have one (obviously), so I will start.

I always hear people saying how Hakeem schooled Shaq in the Finals. Yes, the Rockets got the sweep, it was ownage ( even though if Nick Anderson hadn't missed those free throws... lol, I digress), but I have right here the composite box score from the NBA Finals in 1995. I encourage you guys to check it out and realize that Hakeem did not own Shaq.

Hakeem is a great, great player, don't get me wrong. But those statistics are nearly equal with the only huge differences being turnovers, steals, and FG%.

Myth... busted? Or do you still disagree?

He outscored Shaq in every game. Shaq had alot of turnovers. The Rockets won the series 4-0. Hakeem made Shaq cry. Advantage = Olajuwon.

I was only four when that happened so I may not recall correctly lol. But Hakeem's team swept Shaq's squad, and Shaq felt so badly about his performance and how Hakeem schooled him that he cried. Maybe if it was a one on one battle, Shaq won in some people's eyes, but if I were Hakeem I would feel pretty good about myself.

Who won is not the issue. It's the myth that Hakeem completely dominated Shaq in the Finals, as if Shaq got completely owned by The Dream.

"If I can't beat you, I'll be a man and say I can't beat you. I'm not going to [cry about it]. . . . I'm the first guy to say that somebody is better than me. I was the first guy to say Hakeem Olajuwon beat me in the [1995] NBA finals. He killed me. He dominated me."

It is up for debate who won the battle. I believe Hakeem won. Shaq believes Hakeem won.

But that's the thing, it's not up for debate who won the battle. Hakeem did. No one is saying otherwise. Was it really as dominant as history makes it out to be is the debate.

Well ILLSMAK thinks it is up for debate lol. It is basically known as one of the things that helped Shaq become a better player, experiencing that failure in the Finals and being outplayed.

I remember watching that Finals thinking Hakeem was dominating him just like he did Ewing.

Hakeem wasn't just a scorer his ability to post up, face up and pass out of a double team were so much more advanced than Shaq at that point.

Houston spread the floor so well in the 90's. Hakeem was the point man in this. His ability to read the defense and get the ball out was important. He didn't receive assists for making the first pass but all the threes that Ellie, Drexler, Smith, Maxwell, Jent, Horry, Cassell hit were almost always because Dream was on the floor.

Shaq didn't do terrible, but he still got rocked by Hakeem

                        Re: Myth Busters!

I do not believe that Hakeem just absolutely pounded Shaq into submission, and I think that's the myth the original poster is trying to bust. He's acknowledging the Rockets and Olajuwon advantage was there, but he's saying it's not like Shaq averaged 9ppg in the series on 26% shooting because Hakeem was so godly.

I'm not going to say this is the same situation by any regard, but I also feel Hakeem's performance against David Robinson in 1995 has also gotten a little out of hand. It was spectacular, but it has certainly gained a life of its own as time has passed.

One of the persistant myths I see running about is the certain claim made by 90% of the basketball viewing public that they knew Darko Milicic was a horrible draft pick for the Pistons and would ultimately end up a bust. I understand there were some naysayers, but the truth is consensus said Darko was a shoe-in at the 2nd pick (filling the hole in a Billups, Hamilton, Prince, B. Wallace lineup).

There was certainly debate as to whether Carmelo Anthony may have been a better choice, but most people acknowledged his selection may be redundant what with Prince's emergence and with the Pistons' desperate need for frontcourt scoring, Darko (from what we were told) would be the clear answer. Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were not even on the radar as potential 2nd picks.

With all that said, Darko did bring us a championship, so maybe it was the right choice afterall.
