    Great Sortable Stats Database

I can't believe I just found this site... so incredibly useful and much easier/nicer to navigate than http://www.82games.com and/or http://www.basketballreference.com.

The Portland Trailblazers’ young team had a very strong season, finishing 54-28, but they struggled in a first round loss to the Rockets in the playoffs, leading them to seek outside help to supplement their developing young core. With the 2nd ranked Offensive Efficiency and the 10th ranked Defensive Efficiency, the Blazers will look to […]

Has all the advanced metrics sortable (PER, Win Shares, Rebound Rates, Offensive Value Added, etc.) as well as traditional stats, team stats (advanced and normal), and everything else from shot locations (which player/team shoots the most from 10-15 feet) to charges drawn (Steph Curry leading there so far)... just an amazing trove of information here and it's actually easy to read!

Thought all my fellow stat heads and even some non-stat heads would appreciate it. Can't believe I've never run across it before or that I didn't remember to bookmark if it I did.

    HoopData, I bow to thee.

Heck of a nice find Stumble. I'm going to look at that shot location data and come up with some nice shooting percentage sliders for close, mid, 3pt. along with some team attack tendencies (attack basket, close, mid, etc.) Thanks again Stumble.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

Yeah I seriously don't know how I missed this site before... it's not new. Has almost literally everything I could want to know about any player/team in the most accessible, sortable, customizable format I've seen on the net. That shot location stuff I haven't seen anywhere else... it's almost Synergy-level data... pretty impressive.

I'm going to use the hell out of this during the season to win arguments haha.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. And we actually are quite new (site's only been live for 10-12 days). Let me know if there's anything we could do to make the site more accessible/easier to use. We have a few kinks we still will get around to fixing in the coming weeks, as it was a bit of a rush job to get this ready for the NBA season in time. More stats/functionality are also on the way.

it'd be nice if you guys could make the player stats sortable per season (instead of per year)

Love that they have easily accessed NBA averages.

                  Good find.

The stats are sortable per season. Our 2010 stats refers to the 2009-2010 season, for example. As much as I'd like to, I haven't peered into the future and seen the first 59 games of the year 2010.

                          Re: Great Sortable Stats Database

Stumble, I check regularly to see where our traffic is coming from. Posting on forums like these is the best way to get feedback for ways we can improve both what we offer and how we offer it. Our goal is not just providing statistics, but providing them in the most accessible way possible (which you've noticed with the sorts/glossary/league averages, stuff that peeved me to no end that other sites don't have). Not using viewer feedback to gauge how well we're doing that would be foolish.

DC, our data is done through a combination of using raw statistics from sites like basketball-reference and dougstats, then combining it with parsed data from ESPN play-by-plays. Their PBP's for the past three seasons are ridiculously comprehensive, listing charges, blocks, and all other things we're able to generate, such as and1s, shot locations, assist locations, etc. I was skeptical about the accuracy of the data, but I checked extensively against video to make sure everything was accurate, most notably shot locations. I also work as a logger for Synergy Sports Technology, and have access to their video database, which allows me to check any errors against the logged video.

Since the site was kind of a rush job, we have a lot more stats we plan on adding. For example, one thing on our agenda is something we'll call Block Recovery Rate, which would be the percentage of a player's block shots that end in a defensive rebound (as opposed to an offensive rebound or going out of bounds for a team offensive rebound). Common perception suggests Tim Duncan is a very smart defender who is great at keeping the ball in play and helping the defense recover, while other more emphatic shot blockers like Dwight Howard send a lot more into the stands. It'll be interesting to see what the numbers say.
