Ken Bikoff: (5:32 PM ET ) I think it could be extraordinarily dangerous for the Lakers to have that much talent on the starting lineup. I don't think it makes the Lakers a lock to win the title because you could run into a Trail Blazers-type of situation. Too many stars and not enough role players. Will Payton defer to Kobe in the crunch? Will Malone, if he signs, be willing to be the third or fourth option on offense? Will Shaq be able to get along with all three? Will Payton and Malone pick up the triangle offense quickly? There are a lot of questions with that type of lineup. They would be the favorites to win, but by no means a lock.

I kinda agree with that. All 4 of these guys are going to need to check their egos for the entire season. They will need to work together and respect each others game.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I agree. Even though picking up Payton is great and the chance of getting Malone sounds good, I think it could difficult for those four to co-exist.

Here's a link to the story of Payton agreeing to become a Laker.

                  Link

If the Lakers do sign GP and Malone, the likely starting lineup for next season would be

                  PG - Gary Payton
                  SG - Kobe Bryant
                  SF - Devon George
                  PF - Karl Malone
                  C - Shaquille O'Neal

                  Bench:
PG - Derek Fisher, Jannero Pargo
SG - Kareem Rush, Brian Shaw (if we resign him)
SF - Rick Fox (likely to start again after he heals up, unless George is tearin it up), Luke Walton
PF - Stanislav Medvedenko, Brian Cook, Mark Madsen (if we resign him)
                  C - ??? center by committee.

It seems unlikely that we will resign Brian Shaw now that we have GP. That kinda makes me sad. As well as losing Horry. That wasn't nice at all either. It would be nice to have Madsen along also, since he can jump in and play some center. Even though he is really short, he plays with a lot of energy and . . , ya that's it, he just plays with energy.

So, what we have here are 4 future hall of famers, 2 reliable role playing scorers off the bench in Fox and Fisher, couple of rookies, some players still learning, and a bunch of fillers. I think this is a pretty good looking team who can compete with anyone out there. And if Shaq comes back in shape, and Kobe has no legal problems, this season should be fun.

I still don't like Malone joining this team--if he signs. I think he could end up being the bad seed. Call it a hunch.
