Re: "the hardest punch in the history of mankind."

In Loose Balls theres a story about Maurice Lucas knocking out Artis Gilmore after making Artis chase him the entire length of the floor.

MEMORIES OF GEORGE RORRER: "I covered the Kentucky Colonels for the Louisville Times and they're as much a part of my happiest days as my family. One memory that stands out: One night at Freedom Hall, Maurice Lucas of the Spirits got under Artis Gilmore's skin. Artis, normally the most gentle of giants, started trying to punch Lucas. Artis had superhuman strength, but he wasn't much of a boxer. His blows were almost slaps. Lucas, one of the league's most feared fighters, backpedaled the length of the court. When he got to the baseline, he planted his feet and hit Artis with a straight right to the jaw. Artis went down in sections. First his knees crumpled, then his waist folded, then his arms flailed and then his trunk and head found the floor. By then, teammates had broken up the fight. Those who knew Artis were shocked and saddened, not that Artis had lost a fight but that he had even been in one. His agent, Herb Rudoy, flew in from Chicago to soothe the big guy's psyche. You know the rest. The Big A got over it and Lucas eventually became a Colonel, too."

Not fair? He almost killed someone and his biggest lost was his pro career, so what K-Mart is always hiring, Washington got everything he deserved.

No way in the world a player, running in to assist a team mate after a minor scuffle, is going to "expect" that type of punch coming. He put his arms up when it was way to late.

Washington was a gutless coward basically.
Washington was pissed about the earlier altercation and was looking to hit someone IMO.

Kermit Washington was a great person. Rudy T was a great person. In the brawl Kermit did what came natural and Rudy T did what came natural.

There has been a whole lot written about this but I really can't talk about any of it because I will receive yet another infraction from the OS mods.

But there is a lot of information about this incident and how Kermit Washington's future was changed just as dramatically as Rudy T's was.

For some reason I read an entire book on this punch and the part that stuck out to me most was Rudy failing to realize what had actually happened. I believe he insisted to the doctor that he needed to get back so he could play again that game or the next. The doctor then asked "Rudy, do you taste something bitter in the back of your throat? Well, that's spinal fluid."

Read John Feinsteins "The Punch" which explains the aftermath. Kermit and Rudy were good guys and there lives really changed. Just a bad accident which Kermit never meant to happen.

Heard/seen it many times in the past but Simmons' book brought some better insight to the situation, as well as fighting as a whole in the NBA back then. Crazy stuff.

I don't why I find this story to be so funny.
