Question About Ricky Rubio
So with the way the draft went last year, is he planning on coming to Minnesota next year? Or does he get to re-enter the draft? I don't really understand what his situation is.NFL: Bills
NBA: Bucks
MLB: Cubs
NCAA: Syracuse
Soccer: USMNT/DC United

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
I'm pretty sure Minnesota owns his rights, so he doesnt have to go into the draft again. -

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
I thought he signed a 2 year deal with Barca. So that would mean Minny would have to buy him out if he wanted to come.
Could be wrong though, either way he'll enter the league at like 21-22.Comment

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
Would you leave Spain to go play in Minnesota during the winter? Minnesota could probably get some good pieces by trading his rights to place he'd be more inclined to play like oh I dont know...Miami.As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"Comment

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
The article I read the other day said something to the effect that the T'Wolves hold his rights but only for 3 years, if he waits those 3 years then he can enter the NBA through free agency and get a much bigger payday then he would have gotten using the salary structure for draft picks. The article went on to almost guarantee that he wont come over before those 3 years are up as it isnt financially beneficial to do so. Take it for what its worth but it sounded somewhat legit at the very least.Comment

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
The Chef, that article was kind of incorrect. Minnesota always has his draft rights as long as he is signed to a non-NBA team. So as long as he is signed to Barcelona (or wherever he is), Minnesota holds his rights.
Minnesota loses his rights if he is not signed to a contract outside of the NBA for at least a year. Basically, if he plays out the rest of his European contract, then sits on his *** and doesn't play anywhere for a year and Minnesota still doesn't sign him is the only way he becomes a free agent.
Another three year rule involves the rookie scale contract. If he stays out of the NBA for 1, 2, or 3 years, Minnesota has to sign him at the rookie scale contract for the year he was was drafted/signed. If he comes back after 3 years, Minnesota has the option of signing him to anything he/they wants.Comment

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
Yep if he wants to play in the NBA he has to go through Minnesota. I think he'll be in the nba in 2011. Hopefully for the wolves but he'll probably be traded bc of how well Johnny Flynn is working out.Comment

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
If he stays with Barcelona (I heard up to 6 years, which would be ridiculous), his rights stay with the Timberwolves.
Here's a list from the NBA of players who waited after being drafted to make their debuts:

Re: Question About Ricky Rubio
His buyout is manageable at 1.4 million after the 2010-11 season, so that is where I got the 2 years from. It probably goes down after that also.
But yes he has a six year contract with Barca, doubt he stays though. Eventually he's going to have to come to Minny and play...unless they trade him of course.Comment
