LeBron filed paperwork for switch to #6

James told The Plain Dealer on Monday that he's filed the paperwork with the NBA office to switch his jersey number from No. 23 to No. 6 next season.

This can be seen as good news for Cavs fans. If he switches teams, he can switch his number without filing with the league. Only if he stays with the Cavs does he have to file with the league to switch numbers. At the very least, it means he's considering staying in Cleveland.

And if he does sign an extension in July, I'll run out and buy a #6 LeBron wine and gold jersey.

Yep, I like the switch. I look at LBJ in the olympics, and see #6. It's a good look for him.

He could also being doing because he is yet unsure of where he is going to be. And just playing it safe.

That's the OP's point. If he knew he was leaving Cleveland, there would be no need to "play it safe" as LeBron would have the option to change his jersey number without filing papers. This means Cleveland is at least a very good option (not the only one), though I thought that was public knowledge.

I've been saying from the beginning though that LeBron is staying in Cleveland.

Yeah he was using the MJ excuse as a front to cover up the real reason he is changing numbers...

I don't think he needs to us MJ as a reason to change his number, but im sure $$ is involved in there somewhere

LBJ is trying to get everyone across the league to get everyone who wears #23 to change, right? As great as Jordan was, do you guys really think 23 should be retired league wide?

I don't. What about other really great players like Bird, Magic, Wilt, Russell.....couldn't a case then be made to have all of their numbers retired league wide as well?

Yep this is the same thing MJ said when the media questioned him about it.

LeBron should only be worried about the number 1 as in his first championship. I guess he's unaware of #6 Bill Russell, and his 11 championship rings.
