    Mike Dunleavy is gone

    From NBA.com

    For Immediate Release
    Clippers, Dunleavy Sever Ties
    Tuesday, March 9, 2010 - 5:25 pm (PT)

The following is a statement from the Los Angeles Clippers:

The Los Angeles Clippers and General Manager Mike Dunleavy today have severed ties. Dunleavy previously also served as the team’s head coach from 2003-04 until February 4, 2010, when he resigned as head coach.

The organization has determined that the goal of building a winning team is best served by making this decision at this time. The team has simply not made sufficient progress during Dunleavy’s seven-year tenure. The Clippers want to win now. This transition, in conjunction with a full commitment to dedicate unlimited resources, is designed to accomplish that objective.

Neil Olshey, presently the Clippers’ Assistant General Manager, will assume the duties created by Dunleavy’s departure. He joined the organization as Director of Player Development for the 2003-04 season. He served as an Assistant Coach in 2004-05, and was elevated to the position of Director of Player Personnel from 2005-06 through 2007-08. He assumed the role of Assistant General Manager prior to the start of the 2008-09 season.

Olshey has played an important role in the completion of several significant team transactions, including the deals which brought Marcus Camby, Craig Smith, Rasual Butler, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, and Drew Gooden to the Clippers, among others. He also played a integral part in administering all preparation for the Clippers’ last four NBA Drafts, which produced Al Thornton, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, and last year’s #1 overall pick, Blake Griffin.

I like how they try to build up his replacement. Donald Sterling is probably under the dellusion that he can get one of the big free agents to come to LA, but he'll probably end up giving a lesser free agent a max deal that will cripple the Clippers for years.

Think this had anything to do with the trade deadline trades he made? I don't know.

Kind of weird that the guy steps down as HC to focus on GM responsibilities, makes two trades, then is gone a month later.

I never thought Dunleavy was good coach or finding talent the fit. The clippers are just a mess. Best thing for the clippers there fans and the league is for the team to be sold and move to Anaheim. They need to get out of staple and LA. Make there own new name and get out of Lakers shadow....

As long as Sterling owns them, this franchise will forever be chasing its own tail

This statement is right on point. As long as the Clippers are profitable, Sterling would give a rats-*** about winning.

                ^^^^ have been answered.

The franchise is still doomed while that turd Donald Sterling is involved but this is still a good move.

                    Re: Mike Dunleavy is gone

The odd timing of Dunleavy's departure quite possibly could be explained by one curious coincidence. But knowing the parties and the personalities involved, maybe not.

Sports Illustrated posted a column online saying that sources said former Clippers coach and current Bobcats Coach Larry Brown, concerned about developments in Charlotte, had "reached out to Clippers' owner Donald Sterling to let him know that he is open to returning to L.A."

That column was posted Monday afternoon.

Dunleavy was gone before dinner on Tuesday

So Larry is turning his back on his Carolina Blue blood? Interesting. I never was a fan of his loose ways. What the freaking Clippers need to do is go to another city and make a name for themselves like the other 29 teams in the league.

The Clippers just need a new owner, instantly they'll start improving

Right now they're just a tax writeoff team with talent

that's it right there. Untill that happens nothing good can come from the Clippers (and this is coming from a fan of the team).

Some funny quotes from Bill Simmons mailbag on Dunleavy:

Q: What do you see Dunleavy's next job being? Used car salesman? Camera man for Vivid Video? ESPN analyst? I see him being a supervisor for a Target and micromanaging the hell out of the break schedule.
                          -- Jake, San Francisco

SG: And maybe even bringing in an ice-cold register girl to handle the last minute of a Christmas rush. That would be fun. I see Dunleavy landing where all failed coaches and GMs seem to land these days … television. We're three weeks away from seeing him argue with Roger Lodge on a "Rome is Burning" panel.
The Dunleavy thing went to another level when he admitted to being blindsided by the timing, even though he found out after finishing an afternoon round of golf. The guy had overseen a seven-year stretch in which the Clips lost more than 60 percent of their games, and during a week when every major college conference tournament was launching, he was swinging golf clubs … yet he was completely blindsided by the timing? I thought that explained everything.
