Can a player ask to have a specific coach be part of his contract?

Can a player ask to have included in his contract that X coach will be in charge of the team and with the release of X coach, can allow a player to opt out of their contract and/or require a trade?

Or is this something that wouldn't be allowed?

It's not allowed. Contracts are only allowed to include the party(s) that sign(s) it. Any union has regulations, and is regulated by this general principle. So there is a way to include stipulations, but not when an entity is directly linked. They can however, handshake on that behind closed doors.

So let's say you can't name a party and just put "head coaching change." Isn't that allowable?

I think the "handshake behind closed doors" idea is a bad one... I wouldn't buy into that as an athlete.

No, because "coach" is an entity, and not an asset.

The closest thing I can see happening is both a HC and player having their contract end at the same time. Owners would never agree for the CBA to allow such stipulations. What if the coach just decided to pull a Larry Brown and leave? Too many issues.

^^^That's the issue. "Entities" can't be controlled, so the organization has to protect itself from breach of contract, and our laws have to protect the organizations and the citizens at the same time. So it's illegal, in a sense, to draft a contract with unmeet-able stipulations. The contract would be invalid in court.

They can leave whenever they want but they lose playing eligibility for one year if they transfer.

I don't know Pared, I don't agree with this coach security. Reason for this is because we're into crossing waters where you're some what allowing the player to enter the GM's office.

I thought that wasn't the case with a freshman? Or is it a case by case basis? I thought a freshman can follow the coach that recruited him? I'm referring to football, but I think this happened recently with USC.

And I know what you mean, that's why I'm asking. As a player, I'd hate to go somewhere and have that coach just up and leave and I'm stuck there for 8 years with a guy I don't like.

Lets say you have a 5 year contract with a coach you like. After 2 he gets fired and they bring in Lawrence Frank as a replacement. You want to get out ASAP. If you're a all star/superstar, you can probably be persistent enough to get a trade and get out of there before the contract is up.

And if you're not all star/superstar status than you should have little to no say.

Ha! there are a lot of nondisclosure contracts in comics games and film.
