This is the perfect example of why I hate hard salary caps. You get "punished" for having too many good players. As a season ticket holder, I would be very upset if my team had to start trading away good players only because of a hard salary cap. The current NBA system allows you the option to keep your own players even if you are up against the cap limit. The majority of NBA players stick with their original team beyond their first contract.

Non-guaranteed contracts are a must but as others have said the holdouts will get ugly.

But the league has to find a way to stop teams from doing what the Knicks did by taking two full seasons and NY & Miami did by gutting their rosters for a shot at glory. The Knicks threw away two seasons, the fans suffered. Although unlikely, Miami could strike out and be left with absolutely nothing and the fans will be screwed there too.

A sport where one player can make such a big difference, it is insane that it takes teams multiple years of tanking to straighten themselves out.

In fairness there's probably more tourists than actual Heat fans that even go to Heat games in the first place. That arena is always so empty. Two Years after a title and that place was empty (obviously not as bad as this year) Florida just doesn't deserve a sports team period because they don't even show up until the teams are winning. At least Lakers bandwagoners are there all the time to be seen. The Dolphins are like the only ones that have tons of fans in the stands no matter what.

Why should 29 franchises be punished because the Knicks are delusional?

That had nothing to do with the salary system and everything to do with the dominance that one player can exert in basketball and the large quantity of good players this offseason and the fact that the Knicks thought they could sign whomever they pleased.

That would be like canceling the NFL Combine because the Raiders are going to draft the best athlete instead of a good football player.

Fixed. After seeing the contracts cats have gotten this offseason, like every other year, don't act like every other GM is geniuses.

And anyway, how do non-guaranteed contracts "punish" franchises? Hell they don't even punish players, there isn't another industry in the world where you can sign on a dotted line and never do a damn thing for the next five years and not suffer any consequences.

Handle your business and you've got nothing to worry about. If you're fat, lazy, unmotivated or drink/smoke six days a week then you shouldn't get paid.

Non guaranteed contracts would benefit the sport greatly in my opinion. You would see more teams going from worst to first from one season to the next more often...like in the NFL.

Teams like the Knicks wouldn't have to wait over 2 years to rebuild and wait for a free agent class, or be held hostage by something like an Eddy Curry salary.

Cut a guy on the spot and terminate his salary if he isn't performing or gets into trouble, like in the NFL. If the owners propose this and are serious about it, there's going to be a lockout for a loooooong time. I wouldn't even care if there was a lockout.

EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.
