    Don Nelson to Resign

Citing two sources, CSNBayArea.com reports that Don Nelson is set to step down as head coach of the Warriors.

Keith Smart, a longtime assistant coach in Golden State, will take over for Nelson.

Nelson was in his second stint with the Warriors, one that peaked with an appearance in the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

I think we should unban GSW just so we can see his reaction.

*pours out some 40 for GSW*

Meh...GSW is set up for a while to be a running team, they'd be stupid to change their style now, IMO.

This is a disaster..I was just thinking I need to post my semi-annual Nellywatch thread. I don't want some no-name coaching the Warriors to another lottery. At least make it entertaining. Maybe he could catch on somewhere else? Doubt it though.

Heard that the new coach is going to try to implement a slower, defense oriented style. I don't see how Monta Ellis & Stephen Curry will do in a slower system. The reason Curry was a such a hit as a rookie was because he could play care free and the system Nelson ran was similar to the offensive system McKillop ran at Davidson - up and down pace.

I hope this works out, but I could see this having a huge impact on Ellis & Curry's numbers.

still can't believe the warriors traded chris webber instead of firing nellie in 94.

I don't know, curry seems like a spceial offensive talent, and I'm sure they will still capitalize on fast breaks and have a somewhat offensive tempo. In addition he is one of the best shooters in the league already, and will be deadly with david lee in the pick and roll

What does this mean for David Lee's production?

His production was going to dip regardless due to the fact that he now has good perimeter players around him and doesn't have to be the focal point of the offense. I still imagine he'll be a double double guy. I guess it depends on how Keith Smart runs the team because they still have a lineup made for Nellieball.

You're right about him being a tremendous offensive talent. But, I think he really benefited from being able to play pretty much care free under Nelson.
I do think he'll continue to be a big time player for years to come, but I can see his numbers dipping early in the season while he adjusts to this new style and coach.

Well, Keith Smart as a basketball player is known for this shot in the NCAA Championship game in 87.

On the coaching front Keith Smart has been a long time assistant with Golden State. He has been a head coach in the NBA for half a season in 2002-2003 helping Cleveland land Lebron as their interim head coach.
