Re: Top 5 NBA Players of All Time

You better flush the toilet because I don't want to see that crap. Kobe after everything is finished may be a top-15 player in NBA history but he's certainly not better than Bird...not in his early career, not in his prime and not now.

He's not better than the Big-O but that's another discussion.

I do believe Oscar Robertson never gets the credit he deserves. The man was a beast in all facets of the game...and he was a guard.

A lot of this is due to Oscar himself, by all accounts he was an absolutely miserable and rotten teammate. It's the same reason Rick Barry doesn't get talked up or his due credit. Barry was every bit as good as some guys who get discussed as being top 10 but because he was such an arrogant prick he'll never get the credit he deserves. Being nice goes a long way.

This could be construed as trolling. Can't go around dropping statements like this without backing up your opinion.

...and you heard this from where? I'm not being skeptical, I honestly would like to see an article -- it would be a good read.

Bill Simmons touched on it quite a bit in Oscar's entry in his book and I've also heard about it from other people.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The wildly opinionated, thoroughly entertaining, and arguably definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA—from the founder of The Ringer and host of The Bill Simmons Podcast“Enough provocative arguments to fuel barstool arguments far into the future.”—The Wall Street Journal In The Book of Basketball, Bill Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major NBA debate, from the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball.Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

again, in terms of legacy, importance and accolades, i agree that bird is superior and more highly touted. i acknowledge that by having him higher in my rankings.

however, on a skill-for-skill basis, kobe is superior.

also, what i admit to holding against oscar is that he didn't have to play against people anywhere near his athletic ability. he was so physically superior to others, like wilt, that it's hard to truly gauge his actual greatness, because it was an unfair competitive environment. of course, that's not to excuse him from being mentioned as an outright dominant force, and the numbers he put up will probably never be matched, but i think about those things contextually when i consider players.

one, i don't think that's really true. and two, i don't think that's a good comparison to make between two players who had very good and solid careers, respectively, and two of the ten greatest players of all-time.

kobe is a better basketball player than larry bird, in my opinion, but bird had a better career, greater impact on basketball history, and is more historically significant. all i'm saying is kobe is top ten, and is better than bird, not that he should be remembered or ranked higher.

I respect that your perspective was protrayed in a mature manner. Having said, I do not believe Kobe in his entity is/was better than Bird...Kobe could be argued to have better skills/talent than MJ but to say he is a player is ludicrous which we both would agree.

thanks, i try to keep it respectful in my online debates, .

                                re: kobe vs. bird.
bird's career was better. bird's numbers are better overall. bird has a more significant and lasting impact on the sport, since he saved it. his legacy is cemented and brought the sport to prominence.

i belive that kobe bryant is a better basketball player.

but i still have larry ranked above kobe. just like i have jordan ranked above kobe, despite my opinion than kobe has more skills than both of them.

i would love to hear your argument for larry over kobe, and i will certainly respond with my counter-argument.
