AAU Ball ruined the game! In the 90's none of those guys were friends! They hated each other and ate and slept basketball all day! Oh wait...you saw those videos on the Dream Team where Jordan and chummy with Barkley? Or...wait...you see how Reggie Miller talks fondly of the rivalry with the Knicks. Or...wait...
    This is the NBA board.

The first rule of NBA board is for all praise to go to the magical 1980s and 1990s when basketball was perfect.

Charles Barkley never left a struggling Philly team for 53 win Phoenix in his prime.
Michael Jordan never waited until mid September to sign a contract.
The Bulls never won 55 games without Jordan.
The Lakers and Celtics in the 80s weren't as stacked as the Heat are now.
Shaq never left a championship caliber team to go play in LA.

All of those things were imagined.

Wasn't perfect, but it was certainly better than it is now.

And BATMON if you want something specific just look at the team assist numbers... They're lower now when compared to the 80s and 90s... And that backs up what you see on the court.

Selfish play was hurting pro basketball in the 70s and it's hurting it now. Kids now don't learn the team game anymore and the result is a boring and monotonous product.

        MY bad.

Yeah, the league has always had egotistical players, but not to the extent to where it took away from the beauty of team play
Could you give a specific example. What CURRENT team/player?

If i recall correctly, the ISOLATION ran rampant in the "Golden 90's".

Now when I see a game selfishness is rampant. Even the supposedly good "teams" have been infiltrated with selfish and individualistic play. There are too many players that want the spotlight on themselves and the end result is ugly basketball.
That's why I love the Jazz so much. Yea, some of the players have egos but Coach Sloan keeps them in check. When they listen to Sloan and play Jazz team basketball, they are one of the hardest teams to beat and great fun to watch.

Re: The reason why I think the NBA is failing for me

One of the reasons why the rules were changed was because of the Knicks Heat playoff series of the late 90s and early 00s and the TV ratings. The problem is that they went overboard from one side to the other and that there was a couple horrible draft classes before the 2003 draft class resulting in less talent in the NBA. They also need to hire some younger refs because of the speed of the game.

Structurally there is an issue with the way guys develop before they hit the NBA. One is the way AAU is structured and another is that very few big men develop back to the basket games. All of this can result in a less enjoyable product for people. Regardless, I still love basketball and the NBA but it can use some tweaking.

The change I would make to timeouts is to only allow teams to have 1 full and 1 20 sec timeout in the last two minutes of the 4th quarter.

i have definitely outgrown the nba, and the nfl too. no matter how hard i try at the start of each season neither keeps my interest for too long. however, i can watch old games from the 90's from start to finish whenever they come on.

Or that might be because scoring was a lot higher back in the 80s than it is now.

And comparing the 90s to now, the assist numbers are within 3-4 per game, with some teams like this year's Celtics dishing out as many assists as the 90's teams.

The enforcer power forward who patrolled the paint, the lockdown, physical, on ball defender, the classic low post center are pretty much extinct.

The game is now the domain of the perimeter player, due to the rule changes.

Players now dive into the lane at 100 MPH, bang into a defender, throw some slop up against the glass, and expect to hear a whistle. When they dont get one, they act as if someone just slapped their wife.
i agree 100% and i totally understand where you're coming from being a knicks fan myself and remembering their style of play in the 90's.

the lack of rivalries plagues today's NBA as well in my opinion. the last one that i can remember was la lakers and sacramento, which has been dead for like what 7 years now?

The 90's was the **** because of great rivalries, better officiating, MJ and true centers. It was far from perfect but it was more entertaining than anything post-1999. Guys have always been *******s, selfish, poor teammates, lacked work ethic and so on and so forth.

I just felt like back in the 90s 85% of the teams were worth watching. Now it's like 35%. Maybe I have just grown away from the sport.
