Is it too early to talk about 70 wins as a possibility for the Spurs?
Usually wouldn't get on the hyperbole train, especially considering the fact that we've seen other teams get this sort of discussion and for it to not happen, but at an impressive 38-7 clip with Houston to end the month and how consistent they've been throughout the season, is it too soon to legitimately talk about this Spurs team making the play for 70?Tags: None -

I don't usually like to say someone has no chance to do something, but the Spurs pretty much have NO CHANCE at 70 wins. They would have to avoid losing four more games the rest of the year, not going to happen. -

If they can stay healthy they have a small chance. But, that is a huge "if" with that team.Comment

It's not going to happen. Not with the way Pop likes to give players rest for the playoffs. If they wrap up the first seed before the season is done I could see him sitting Duncan, Manu, and Parker for a game or two.Comment

Re: Is it too early to talk about 70 wins as a possibility for the Spurs?
Looking at the rest of their schedule, I think it's possible. They're 39-7 and can only loose 5 more games. Here are some KEY games that might be possible looses for them:
Feb 3 - @ Lakers
Feb 17 - @ Bulls
Mar 4 - vs Heat
Mar 6 - vs Lakers
Mar 14 - @ Heat
Mar 18 - @ Mavs
Mar 31 - vs Celtics
Apr 12 - @ Lakers
So if they can win 4 of these games(assuming they win out the rest of the schedule) they'd get there. NOW, also assuming that they win their home court games against the Heat, Lakers and Celtics on this list, all they'd have to do is take one of the road games.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. As a Laker fan I really hope he pushes his team hard to go for it. Be my guest....
In all seriousness, it's not going to happen. It's against Pop's philosophy.NFL - Vikings

Re: Is it too early to talk about 70 wins as a possibility for the Spurs?
I think there's virtually no chance.
1. It's an older team even though theyve added a few younger players. As the minutes start to add up, this doesnt work in their favor.
2. As has been mentioned, if they get close to 70 wins, theyll likely have enough of a lead to rest players, which speaks to the previous point of it being an older team.
3. Even if they went for it, as the season becomes a grind, being a target will make it harder to sustain their level of success. Just look at the Suns-Celtics game. The Suns are a mediocre team and they worked the Celtics on some random Friday night. Thats just part of the grind of an NBA season. So there will likely be a handful of games like the Suns-Celtics.
4. Again, even if they went for it, they still have some tougher games on their schedule. They still have to play the Lakers 3 times (that I counted) with 2 of them being at LA. LA could easily be picking up steam by the time they play those games. The Spurs also still have games at Chicago and Miami and a home game against Boston. They also have games against OKC and Dallas.
As well as their season has gone, they're currently on pace to win 69.5 games. As the season wears on, the odds of them increasing that winning % diminishes.Last edited by Wang Chung; 01-29-2011, 01:38 PM.Comment

They have to finish 31-5 to get there. Anything is possible, but it's very unlikely. Not only is the task itself challenging, the Spurs have never been a team that cares about the regular season and Pop will likely give the players some rest before the Playoffs.Indianapolis Colts

Yeah like a few have already pointed out this veteran team will rest once a top 3 seed is locked. Pop doesn't seem like a coach that will chase records. You looking at the Chair MAN!

Yeah, the back slate is interesting, and I can see this team in the 65-70 win (at maximum) category.
Just wondered what others were thinking. It's pretty obvious from how they've run this season that they don't care about giving their starters big minutes. It's all about the playoffs.Comment

Starting Feb 1st they play road games for 3 weeks. Now they have the Pistons, Raptors, 76ers and Kings in that stretch, but I could see some drop off during that period.NFL - Vikings
