I don't have a middle switch I usually just focus on passing the ball and getting my teammates easy buckets instead of trying to get mine. I know if my shot's off I can easily miss layups. My confidence is fragile that way
I have also been this guy on many occasions.

And much like many others in this thread, I have been the guy who has had those hot shooting days. Followed by cold ones right after.

But since I've been experiencing pain and discomfort (which has been bothering me all year) in my shooting elbow, I am going to try and become more of a passer now.

I did this a few nights ago and played one of the more "complete" (in the sense of every aspect, offense, defense, passing, rebounding, etc) that I can say I've ever played.

Re: The worst pick up players.

I had a teammate last night who was badly beaten off the dribble, in between half court and the top of the key. He wasn't even really trying to play defense. After getting beat, he stood 30 feet from the hoop and watched. So his man drove into a wide open lane and with my man standing in the corner. I left him to stop ball, but I knew I was basically playing two-on-one.

As I stepped up to help on the guy who would have had a wide open layup otherwise, he read the play correctly and kicked it out to my man in the corner, who was insanely wide open due to my help D and the fact my teammate was still 30 feet from the hoop. The dude drilled the jumper. My teammate then had the audacity to say, "That's your man. You gotta put a hand up, he can shoot."

In response, I asked my teammate why my guy was wide open in the corner. He said that's what he was trying to figure out himself. So I walked him through and said something along the lines of, "Where was your man? He was walking into the paint, wide open, because you just stood there. As such, I stepped up to stop ball and help, so he wouldn't make a wide open layup."

      His response?

"Oh, I didn't know we were playing zone."

I've noticed this alot. No matter where you go whether it be a gym or a public park people love to play zone. It helps me get a few easy looks mid range.

I hate the guy that tries to set up things but has no idea what the hell he is doing. Just the other day I was playing a 5 on 5 game and this guy keeps saying how "we need to break down their 2-3 zone" when the opposing team was running man to man. I just shook my head and kept playing.

I'll have to admit that I'm the guy who sweats a little too much. I'm not fat, I'm clean cut, don't have hair everywhere, wear deodorant and I'm in shape, but I sweat buckets.

Re: The worst pick up players.

Yeah, Im right across the river in Jersey City and here we pretty much only play man, so when I went to my friends house in NYC and we played ball I said "so who you you guys want?" They looked at me all weird and said "na man, we play zone". I was so confused lol

Anyway, today I played pick up basketball, and i HATED HATED HATED the guys I played against. They took the liberty to play really physical, thats OK. I dont mind a physical game. What got to me is that they called every single foul on us. Then when one of my teammates called a foul, they said "why are you being such a bitch, this is a man's game". We won anyway, but I hate people who play physical but cant handle being played physically.

Re: The worst pick up players.

The only time I get physical is if an opposing player really pisses me off. You know the guy that is wearing all the gear like he is a pro and is extremely cocky when in reality he sucks? I ran into one of these the other day. Every time he popped a jumper (which was often since he was a chuck) he would scream "MAKE IT RAIN". Please just Go Home

also, I've played a couple universities and they definitely play more man and set a lot more off ball screens and misdirection than your average pick up game in the city

I think it's a regional thing, or a city by city thing if nothing else. Personally, the only times I've ever come across zone defenses in pick-up is when a group of players get mismatched against their opponent and they have very unfavorable man-to-man matchups, so they resort to zone, where they end up getting burned anyway.

Also one time a group of friends showed up at our court for a couple weeks and they always insisted on being on the same team and they'd always play a zone too. It was kind of a weird situation all around.

And I guess there's always random old guys who try to go into coach mode and attempt to orchestrate a 1-3-1 trap in the corner but again, that never pans out well.

That's about it though. I see street zones about once a year. But apparently it's a regular occurrence in other locations. I definitely prefer man-to-man.

Back when I went to NC State, we had a group of guys who would play for 4-5 hours a day. Halfway through, we would go zone to preserve energy. Also, we all considered ourselves knowledgeable in the game of basketball, so we wanted to try against different things. We would do 2-3, 3-2, and 1-3-1.

Did you ever find success in using a 1-3-1? Just curious to be honest with you

We always play man to man, simply because the majority of the guys we play with never played organized basketball. They would get flat our abused if they tried running zone.
