Re: The worst pick up players.

I feel like I'm declining with my basketball skills right now. I get gassed out quickly and have been playing lazy defense. All due to my lack of stamina now. I miss my younger days. Anyways, to answer this question, a lot have already been said. But I do get annoyed by the guy who usually wants to fight whoever fouls him hard or the guy who plays very rough on you on defense. Also hate the guy who thinks he is the "Kobe" in the game where he hogs the ball all the time and his teammates just stand and watch.

How old are you? Any chance you're just not used to playing right now?

This YMCA is a very small YMCA in greenpoint. You don't see many "hood kids" in there playing ball. Mostly high school kids or old guys looking for a good game. Remember this the damn YMCA. I don't want to say it is mostly white guys trying to play basketball. That would be wrong. Lets just say the talent level isn't always up to par. So basically we always try to make even teams. During the first game. Just to make it fun. So these 4 guys come in the gym saying they have their team already. By the looks of them. I can already tell these guys play basketball. They will not play with anyone else but their 4 guys. So they pick up some other kid (not talented) up. But just before the game starts. Their other find comes into the gym. And they drop the kid. This guy they picked up was about 6'5-6'7. Remember guys its the YMCA. A bunch of kids and old guys just trying to play a good game. So I've seen this story before. And I knew exactly what was going to happen. They blowout the first 3 teams 21 to 5,2, and 7. One of the guys on this team is actually talking **** to the other team after beating them.

Remember it is the YMCA. If it were the park I wouldn't complain one bit. But your talking **** to guys who have never played on team before (some who just started playing basketball recently). These guys obviously played on teams before.

Guys am I wrong to be this pissed off? What I wanted to do was call my boys. And drop them like bad habits. Because I know my team/boys would of beaten this team easily.

As a 47-yr old OG who plays with his 20-yr old son and his friends on a regular basis, I've seen it all over the years. But "Gear Guy" is probably one of my favorites.

"Take Charge" guy would be a close second.

My friend is a definite gear guy. He does the sleeve, headband, all that stuff. I just think all that stuff is ridiculous personally.

Also, I've never played zone in a pickup game. We played 2-3 in one intramural game because we only had 5 guys and didn't want to get tired, but other than that, no zone, all man..

Lol awsome thread. I have a few.

The catapult- Guy can hit covered beyond the arc threes with ease but can't hit a simple layup.

The post game ESPNer- After the game he will constantly go up to you and all of you're friends to discuss his highlights. You might even catch him 3 games later to go in detail about his first game scores.

The physical old guy- The guy who is well into his 50's and chooses to throw elbows and slap your hands. If you even breeze on him he calls foul.

The half court defender- The guy who is a great offensive piece, but he will try to free lance on defense and often will get shook by his guy at half court, and of course doesn't follow him to defend the basket.

I'm 27 right now and turning 28 later this month. My skills and energy are severely declining though. But I'm sure it's all because I'm just not going out there and play everyday like how I see many others do it. I would if I could. I can still spot up and shoot the deadly jumpers though. That's about my only saving grace.

I bet your energy is declining at 28 years old!

You're done. You can still be a referee for a few years though.

It's rare, to be sure. But when you get a couple minutes before a game to discuss and get everybody on the same page, it's hella effective. Guys in pickup ball have no clue how to deal with zones, and lettuce be reality, there aren't many good outside shooters in pickup ball.

Absolutely not. I'm a pure junkballer. Kevin McHale Up and unders; 12-ft finger rolls; untouchable fade-aways; jack-up-off-the-dribble-threes; skyhooks off the block... no, no shutting me down.

Now - I'm not saying I score on all those, but some will go in. I will not be shut down.

Oh - and I left out the most important part: I'm an awful defender.

Bummer. You're right, if you're not out there on a regular basis, it can go pretty quickly. The good news is, if you ever do get the opportunity to play more regularly, it'll come back pretty strongly as well. I'm 29 and still going hard and my brother's turning 33 this year, seemed to take ten years off the game and is now back in it and probably in the best basketball shape of his life, dunking again and whatnot.

Most players with game to the level of needing things like sleeves for maximum production or a noticeable difference are just messing around in pick up games at the park, and therefore wouldn't wear it. And other than something like a sleeve, anybody wearing a jersey, matching gear, serious head bands, arm bands, etc. look like they just watched the NBA on ABC and have no clue about anything but the shape of the ball and where to find a hoop.

I don't think I've ever seen a player I've considered good wearing any kind of official NBA or college gear.

Now if I saw someone wearing a reversible jersey from a Nike or 5 Star camp, I might have that feeling... expecting a lot and easily disappointed.
Idk man. A lot depends on what kind of game you're playing with. In college and about 5-6 yrs after I played regularly with college and sometimes low-mid level NBA players and all they wore college/ NBA gear but I get what you're saying, Jerseys and what not.

One of the worst outings I had was vs this guy wearing some game shorts I didn't recognize. After he fried me my buddy filled me in, "Oh Black (his nickname), yeah he's nice. He hoops in Italy and gets buckets."

As you get older you see more accessories. Guys are always looking to gain an advantage and fight father time. The accessories I wear are out of necessity, lol.

Had to come back for two more lol.

The "Has" been- Guy apparently used to be a baller back in the day and feels the need to remind you every time he steps on the court. Sometimes adding injury to insult, he really wasn't that good to behin with lol.

The "Could" have been- The guy was supposedly a hot shot who's career got cut short due to a freak injury and takes out his failed dreams on middle aged guys and average pick up gamers.

We have one of these guys at our local church ball named Jeff. He doesn't shake anyones hand, he wears the sweatbands, underarmor, old team jersey, etc. He feels he is really above everyone else so doesn't communicate, doesn't call for plays, won't give anyone props for a good shot/play, and sometimes he will even put in his Ipod in mid game. After the game he gets some water, goes to his corner, and does his own thing, without saying good game to anyone who first said it to him.

I have a feeling all of these people talking about how good they are... don't realize that they are some of these people we are talking about.
                                Kevin Garnett is innocent.
