Going to former team's rival makes you a trader?

The Boston Celtics have come to terms with Carlos Arroyo.

I'm a Heat fan and all, but I don't think he's a trader. What do you guys think about a player being released and going to his former team's rival?

When a team releases you, you're free game to sign with whoever wants you. What would you do if you were Arroyo? Tell the Celtics no? And pass up a chance to win a title? Screw that. The Celtics want you, you say heck yes.

No it doesn't make them a "trader". Fans care more about this than players do. At the end of the day it is a job for the players and they will go where they want.

I'd say if you're a long-standing member of a team that's been part of a critical rivalry and you jump to the opposition, then yes, it would be traitorous. But if you're Carlos freakin' Arroyo and the "rivalry" is Celtics/Heat, then no, it doesn't matter because no one gives a damn.

Depends on the player. If Kobe went to Boston, or Paul Pierce to LA, then, yes, as a fan I'd view them that way.

            Carlos Arroyo? Nah.

Are Boston and Miami even 'rivals'? I mean, really? Let them play a heated playoff series or something first...

                  Exactly.

And to add to this, if you're someone who played a significant role on your team and contributed to at least half of your team's success while you were there, I'd put him in this category. But if you're just some scrub bum(see Arroyo, Carlos) and you do this then I wouldn't consider you a traitor because he's a nobody anyway.

You're not a trader if you were released from a team

I wouldn't go that far. Robert Horry played a huge role making 3s in the Lakers championship runs, then he went on to become a Spur and helped them win a few.

Since the Lakers/Spurs were battling for Western supremacy back then, I'd call them rivals for the time period. But I don't remember anyone thinking Horry was a traitor or anything of the sort.

I think in the NBA, you need to be a franchise player for anyone to care if you switch teams.

Well no one has made TOO much of a deal about Shaq being a Celtic..

not that big of a deal either way IMO...

People take this stuff to seriously sometimes.

                            Traitor?

                            It's a business.
