Yeah, last year when I was a senior in high school I strained something in my back and had to wear one of those icy-hot pads taped to my back for a game or two or I wouldn't have been able to really do anything (actually had one of my best games of the year with it on my back surprisingly lol), but then I got back spasms this year in college when I was stretching after working out. I assume it depends on where exactly in your back you're getting the spasms, but it was the worst pain I've had since the time the doctors had to go in and cut my tongue with a pair of scissors. I could barely breathe and I couldn't get off the floor (I was stretching on the floor). I was so scared.
My mom also gets back spasms as a result of a car crash. She was a division 1 soccer player and played in softball leagues in our town too and like one of the other guys in here said, she's one of those "I wanna do everything" kinda people. She used to carry the bags of soil and stuff from Home Depot. Now because of how bad her back is, she's not allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds and can't really play any sports anymore besides the occasional miniature golf game.
