    The MVP Award

So what is this awards worth, to you? How much does being the best player through the regular season matter in the grand scheme?

I ask because I read plenty of columns and posts that all make the MVP award seem like the holy grail of basketball, given to the next great chosen one. To the player who played the best ball all year, and should be considered the guy who can lead his team to the Larry O'Brien trophy.

But the last time the regular season MVP was on the team that won the NBA championship was 8 years ago(Tim Duncan, 02-03). In fact, over the last 10 years, only 4 players who have won an MVP award have gone on to win a title at all (Duncan, Garnett, Bryant, and welcome to the club Dirk).

Maybe it's just me, but I'm starting to feel like the MVP award holds much less importance than it has in the past.

    What thinks you?

    Re: The MVP Award

It's displayed to be a lot more important in basketball than in other sports (how many NFL MVP's can you name?...)

It doesn't really translate to postseason success, but more shows who was able to have the most regular season success.

Although it's at time unfairly awarded to the person with the best "story", if you've won an MVP your legit.
    Chicago Bulls
    Chicago Bears
    Wisconsin Badgers

      Re: The MVP Award

I know that the difference of the playoffs to the regular season is valid in a lot of debates, but in this case I don't think "different" means "better".

It says a lot about a player who can raise his game in the playoffs, and since a championship is the goal, that holds a lot of weight. But it also says alot about a player who can carry his team over the course of 82 games. I think this season is a perfect example. The Bulls weren't the favorites to win the championship bc it was pretty much known that they overachieved. But they still deserve credit for taking the talent they have to the best record in the league. Rose deserves the credit he got for his role in that. We all know he's not the best player in the league, but he had an MVP season.

I think it just makes sense to reward Rose and Dirk, just for different reasons.

Crazy stat I remembered from a little while ago

In the last decade there have been only 3 MVP's to go on and win a title that same year in basketball, football, baseball, and hockey. It hasn't happened in football since 2000 and baseball since 1984.

Its very important to me. It shows how well an individual can achieve great success by making his teammates better players. Although it sometimes seems like the definition of the award changes from year to year.

            Re: The MVP Award

The MVP award (like most of the regular season awards) is completely bogus. The criteria has never been totally clear and it is voted on by media types who have no idea what players are supposed to be doing.
