My bad Pack. I misunderstood you when you mentioned the "get out of jail free card" But after reading your post, I get it.

Yes, I'm for owners getting an option to dump a contract due to sudden injury. But no way I don't condone releasing the contract of an Eddie Curry type. Especially in that situation when the Knicks knew he had a heart problem before they got him. Sorry, but owners will have to live with that decision.

The owners ability to make NBA owner money last as long as they have the right people running the franchise and the right system in place. Players window to make NBA type money is what on average less than 5 years?

I agree something has to be done, but IMO unguarenteeing contracts is not one. Like I said giving both sides opt out clause half way through is more than enough of a "safety net" and fair for both sides. So if they sign a player to a 4 year deal their only obligated 2 years at a time. Guy gets hurt year 1 or 2 you can opted out. He gets hurt year 3 he's only on the books for one more year and year 4 his contract is up.

        Agreed.

In situations like that, where you KNOW a player has a SERIOUS Medical Condition(IE Heart Condition)beforehand and yet you STILL give him that much money, then that's on you(Owner). A situation like that where I would say that the Owner is SOL on that.

Fact of the matter is contracts should be shorter period

Some owners have to overpay to get players to come to their teams

..thats not my argument here though, mine is that the extra long term deals should be nixed

It can be shady business on both sides of the coin, but one thing we all agree on is that things need to change

Re: NBA Lockout and Collective Barganing Agreement Discussion

My question is what difference is there between having 7 year deals with opt out clauses for both sides after 4 vs having 4 year max deals and if both sides are happy, you re-sign?

That's pretty much the same thing minus a bunch of performance stipulations.

If you make the max contract length shorter you can keep contracts guaranteed. To me there's not much point to a non-guaranteed contract; why even have a contract?

On the salary cap front: Keep a system similar to what we have but start the luxury tax at the salary cap. Maybe throw in some ridiculous second tier luxury tax to discourage the ultra heavy spending teams a bit more. Throw in a salary floor too for good measure.

Making the contract shorter is just that. If the player and the owner are happy with the arrangement, they can re-up. If not, then whatever.

I wouldn't allow any contract to be longer than 4 years.

If you sign a 4 year deal with an opt out clause. You can be out of the deal in two. Max 4 year deals you have only 4 years, but you are stuck at 4 very similar. I think the opt out will go over better with the players because they get longer deals.

OK. What Broussard just predicted, isn't that what Sheridan predicted like 2 weeks ago?

Who cares what ESPN thinks? Not a hit at the poster but at Broussard himself. Unless you're in the talks, owners, league, players, agents, no on cares what you think.

But two sources who have been briefed on the talks indicated the following: sometime during the last of the small sessions between the two sides in New York, on Sept. 7 and 8, the union made its 53 percent concept to the owners. After the proposal was made, according to the sources, the union believed it had assurances from the other side that the offer would be viewed favorably by the owners’ Labor Relations Committee. That was the basis of player optimism — including union executive committee member Roger Mason’s infamous “looks like a season” tweet a few days later. And that’s why the union was so crestfallen on Sept. 13, when the meeting with each side’s full negotiating committees failed to produce a breakthrough.
