    Re: JaVale McGee

I don't know why you guys can say he's a stupid player by watching two videos where he took dumb shots.

If we go by that logic then Kobe is the most brain dead player in NBA History.

Besides, They weren't even that bad, Like the coach is yelling at him for trying it with 20 seconds left down by 30.. Not like it was with the game on the line.

It's true he does get a little over confident with his ability to block shots and bites on fakes. But he's not the only one. he's not even the worst.

and I NEVER SAID HE WAS DWIGHT HOWARD. I said a Dwight Howard TYPE Player. Like straight Power. Huge Alley-Oops. 60% of FG's are Dunks. That kind of thing. Jeez.

I'm with you here. I've been trying to figure out exactly how he developed a reputation for being so allegedly stupid. If it's based off his two dunk attempts, then I find such a conclusion quite unfounded.

When I've raised this intelligence question before, folks tend to say something in general terms such as "he doesn't have good court sense." And to me, that's a really general statement, but it might be true. However, JaVale McGee is certainly not the first or only player in the league with a less-than-stellar court sense. Yet, he seems to be one of the only players who has it tie directly to how smart he is.

To be clear, I'm not proclaiming JaVale to be some sort of genius. I don't know the in's and out's of his life. I've heard him speak and I haven't been knocked to the floor with ineptitude, but I know it can be tough to draw accurate conclusions one way or another based off of a small sample of spoken interviews. It just seems at one point there was an almost meme-like labeling that took place after those ridiculously awesome dunk attempts and in the process, that label somehow turned into undeniable truth.

Ive watched him play 30 plus games live for 3 years. He's one of the dumbest players I've ever seen play.

People still believe this clown is any good.

I feel like this thread is a sequel to the Andray Blatche thread made a while back when people actually thought he was going to be anything special in the league when it turns out he's not and is absolutely turrible just like this bum is.

I live in the DC area...have watched McGee time and time again. He can flash some power and what not, but he is Dwight Howard for maybe 2 possessions a game...therefore there's no comparing.

Absolutely no one made the conclusion that this guy is an idiot from those videos. Most of us stated it before they were even posted. I'd also say most of the people who have spoken up about his lack of intelligence, stubbornness, sense of entitlement and identity crisis (how can he be like Dwight Howard when he wants to play facing the basket and closer to the wing?) live close to the DC area and have watched our share of Wizards games. Bonus for those that also listen to local talk radio and have an even better idea of how this guy ticks.

I wasn't looking to make accusations. Rather, I was looking for information. What makes JaVale McGee so much dumber than any other player in the league? I ask in this fashion because at this point, the word "stupid" in the NBA seems to be directly associated with Mr. McGee. I see a lot of folks in the league who seem to have poor awareness on the floor; even more who make questionable decisions with the ball (and without it) while also having a history of struggling academically. I ask out of my own ignorance (as I do not live in the DC area nor listen to talk radio), what sets JaVale McGee apart from normal NBA players in terms of stupidity?

Stupid is the general term being used here, and if we're going to look at it technically, what's stupid about him is how he's wasting his natural ability based on the choices he's making. But the reason he won't be the player you think he could become is because he has a horrible work ethic, he's very stubborn and thinks he's better than he is, he'd rather play more like a SF than a C (yet doesn't have the skill set to consistently do either), he's selfish and probably rarely considers his team or game situation when making decisions on the court, and he's a complete knucklehead off the court who will eventually find himself in serious legal trouble. That's what I can think of off the top of my head. There's probably more.

Appreciated. Mostly all I see of him are the spectacular highlights. I wasn't aware of off the court issues, nor some of the on-court things. He actually sounds like a few other guys in the league.

I came in this thread and those were the thoughts rattling around in my head. You saved me alot of time, thank you. LoL. . Guy could be a beast, it's amazing what a simple change in attitude and perspective could do for some of these NBA players with all the talent in the world (but you could say that about people in general, really).

One of McGee biggest fan, but just plain and simple dude is stupid when it comes to being a center in the NBA..As Ron Artest said last year.

“He potentially could be a really good player,” Artest said. “I think he got to go to school a little bit more. He’s got to work on that IQ a little bit. He got to watch more tape. I don’t think he watches tape. I think he plays video games. I do. I don’t think he watches tape. I think he plays video games and I think he could possibly have an Atari. He should upgrade to a Play Station.”

Atari? He’s that out of date?

“Possibly Atari,” Artest said. “He could potentially become a force, if, if he wants to. But if he doesn’t, he can continue to play Atari.”

                                Also Lamar Odom said
Lamar Odom back at Team USA basketball camp this summer said McGee needed to develop a better feel because “the game is called basketball, not run and jump.”
