LeBron mania is in full swing – have you seen the TV spots yet? – you will.… having not even played in his first regular season NBA game, LeBron James has already graduated to first name icon status… You no longer have to say LeBron James, LeBron will do and most (basketball) people will know who you mean. The burning question among fans in Cleveland is how good will he be? My answer is simple… it doesn’t matter… James may turn out to be the best thing since Michael Jordan, but he wasn’t drafted because of his basketball ability… He is truly a boy among men now, and while he’s got some game to his flash, he’s proving he’s got a long way to go before you could even compare him to Kobe or Tracy McGrady, let alone icons like Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson. His 4-for-18 performance against Devean George and the Lakers proved that. Using the patented “dare ya to shoot” defense, George exposed nationally, what most knew privately… LeBron is not a very good shooter. In a game of dunks and making the pass he’d be an All-Star, but when you struggle to bury the open shot in the NBA, your going to end up like Darius Miles, rather than Michael Jordan – regardless of the shoe deals you sign or soft drinks you drink. On the business side, the NBA has found it’s new media and advertising darling, but on the “win me some basketball games” side… LeBron has a long way to go… So it shouldn’t surprise you when the coaching staff says the Cavs are Ricky Davis’ team… he’s the only guys that can bury a shot consistently. LeBron will sell the tickets, he will sell some jerseys, but at the end of the day, he’s role is not about winning, rather selling, just like with the Magic signed Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady… One was there for wins, the other was there to sell tickets and jerseys, don’t lose sight of what LeBron is here for… Big Business… wins might come later.
Pretty much sums it up.
