I still hold that he gets severely underrated by most.
I don't think anyone that's seen him play has questioned how good he can be. There's a reason the Lakers have refused to move him multiple times. The problem is that he hasn't been able to stay on the floor, so I can't get too excited about what I see when he's healthy. I need to see him STAY healthy before I make a statement like that. Dwight is the focal point, is hammered 90% of the times he touches the ball and never misses games. Bynum gives me that (just the last part) and we can have a conversation.

A healthy Bynum with the same minutes as Howard is BETTER than Howard. A big man with touch and finese, who can rebound the ball and be a monster on defense, is hard to come by. He doesn't have the physicality that Howard does, but his upside on offense is WAY higher while his defense is close. He may alter more plays than Howard does.

All that junk above said, he's not proven to be able to stay healthy. Granted, 2 of the season long injuries were freak accidents, but until he's consistently healthy it's a tough discussion to have.

You can look at stats all day long, but it's tough to compare when bynum has needed quite a few games to come back and get in the groove. When he does, he's been a monster.

It's tough being a Laker's fan with Bynum because the kid has huge huge talent but getting a monster right now in Howard would be great for the "right now" plans.

Laker fans are fickle, I'm in your same boat. It's stupid to say it but you have to love Bynum's game. I really liked where the offense was headed for the majority of the game, Kobe as the distributor worked wonders. With such a hole at the PG it's hard to gauge what this team really needs. I think the front office had it right focusing on Chris Paul first, I mean at this point it's equivalent to a straight Pau swap since LO was shipped off anyway.

Personally, I think the Lakers look great as is. But if an opportunity arises to get a critical upgrade at the PG position at the cost of Gasol (not expecting a superstar but some type of package) it would be beneficial to not only the team but Bynum's development.

At some point Bynum will have to get the same nod they'd be willing to give Dwight. Just a matter of time.

This team can actually win a title. The current Laker team is now made up of heady players who succeed on fundamentals and knowing the game. It's amazing what a year makes -- and a different coach. Instead if wanting to slam my head against the wall because our talent should be slaughtering teams and we're NOT, now I watch and see a hustling, smart team that has shooters and some good young talent.

Nothing against Phil Jackson, but it's refreshing to have a defense-first coach and see it paying dividends. Mike Brown also has done a great job putting in Ebanks and letting him grow with the first team and having Artest.. uh World Peace's leadership and drive guide the 2nd team.

A different coach and philosophy and quite a few new faces have made me quite optimistic about this team, regardless of Paul not being here.

We NEEEED a PG badly though. I actually want a PG more for defense than the ability to distribute. When we play anybody with a half-decent PG, they look like a complete superstar. Sigh.

It certainly was an incredible night he had. But to be fair (and I'm sure others are going to say) he did put up a lot of those numbers against a Houston squad that lacked size.

I'm not knocking his night, I'm a huge proponent of his game. I think he's gonna do big things and put up monster numbers this season.

Not being a 4th option and LO being gone and Mike Brown running this team differently will all have a huge impact on his game this year.

I was reading the first few pages in this thread and it simply blows my mind on some of the guys that people said were better or would rather have over Drew.

I guess you could say it's all moot if he gets injured again, but I am assuming we are only speaking to the thread title and that's a healthy Drew.

Like I said in the game thread, we've all seen this before. He has a stellar game and then disappears for 3 or 4 straight games.

Until I see an entire season where this guy is a consistent impact player, I'm not going to to think too highly of him. The mark of a great player is consistency. For now I think he is a nice complimentary player.

A healthy Andrew Bynum nearly as good as Dwight Howard. Imagine Howard on a team where he's a third option? This year they're actually featuring him over Pau Gasoft, which I 100% agree with. You just don't find big men with the touch, length, and athleticism as Drew.

Too bad few get to see that Bynum as it usually takes a games to ramp up and get in the groove, then he dominates a few games, then he's rehabbing a season ending injury.

I suppose I'll get laughed out of the forums for my statement that Drew is nearly or is as good as Howard, but I remember a couple years ago saying I'd rather build a team around Durant and he'd my guy over LeDecision. Glad he proved I at least wasn't crazy.............. totally.

I'll still take Dwight over Drew, but he's the only center that I would right now.

Bynum leading the league in PER. Three games, of course. Still don't think he's being fully utilized either.
