I would love to see Vince Carter get a ring

Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady were my favorite players when I was younger. Now VC is on the Mavs I would love to see them repeat.
I don't think it will happen though. Surely Lebron can't choke again. And there are so many good teams. Clippers are exciting.
Atlanta don't really have a chance so I think as an Aussie and having no allegiance to any team I'm going to jump on the Mavs bandwagon.

The Mavs could repeat, their team is going to be sick once everyone gets in sync with each other. Their bench is ridiculous, and they still have Dirk. So I can definitely see them repeating. It's going to be tough though. But I also would like to see VC get a ring.

Re: I would love to see Vince Carter get a ring

I'm kinda upset at their slow start but it looks like most of it has to do with half the damn team being out of shape as Dirk said....

But once they get their legs under them you are right their bench is going to be scary good

      PG-Roddy Beaubois
      SG-Jason Terry
      SF-Vince Carter
      PF-Lamr Odom
C-Ian Mahinmi........(Dude is really starting to come on now)

They could even go big with Odom at SF and VC at SG

But for now Odom needs to get in shape and also get his mind right....i think they will end up with the 4th or 5th seed and one team that doesn't want to play them even if they aren't as good this year is OKC.

OKC still has tons of trouble defending Dirk

I wouldn't. He's heartless and arguably the biggest waste of talent in NBA history.

          Doesn't deserve a damn thing.

But if it means Dirk and Marion get another one, I'll live with it.

Re: I would love to see Vince Carter get a ring

I saw Antoine Walker get a championship ring with the Miami Heat so I guess anything is possible but yeah I agree with the above there's a laundry list of guys who should get rings before Vince. I used to be a huge VC fan back in his Toronto days when he was appointment television but at this point the only thing Vince deserves or should get is a swift kick in the *** for being such a waste of talent.

Biggest waste of talent in league history might be a fun topic for this board. God knows there's a plethora of choices.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

My man needs to get that ring ASAP and if he has to go the Mike Bibby-Gary Payton-Eddie House route of ring chasing...then so be it!

Re: I would love to see Vince Carter get a ring

I'm a big fan of Vince Carter's, but I don't have any kind of yearning for him to get a ring.

I'm still not sure I understand the waste of talent sentiment though. He certainly wasn't perfect and the manner with which he forced his way out of Toronto was totally not kosher, but at what point did seemingly every critical fan come to the individual conclusion that Vince Carter had the potential to average 35 points per game if he had just tried? It is my opinion that averaging 25, 6, and 5 over the course of one's prime is not exactly a waste. I'm wondering at what point everyone collectively decided he was capable of so much more?

Calling Vince Carter a waste of talent has felt like another one of those assumed NBA truths (so to speak) that are repeated enough times by enough pundits and fans that they force themselves into becoming undeniably true simply because too many people have said so. Somewhere along the lines, it seems Carter's popular emergence in '00 set the stage for everyone to believe he'd become the next Michael Jordan. Aside from being a high flyer from UNC, what led anyone to believe he'd fall anywhere within the same stratosphere as Michael Jordan? Or even, just because they were both on the rise at the turn of the century, why was it assumed Kobe and Vince should have both been equally as successful?

Essentially, who decided what his talent ceiling was? Did people see him furrow his eyebrows at key moments in games (in lieu of snarling) and assume that meant he didn't care? As athletic as he was, do people think he was able to average 22, 5, and 4 over 13 seasons of NBA basketball by not really trying? Because it was publicized that basketball was not his only endeavor and passion in life, is it assumed he didn't put time into the game?

Even if opinions differ in terms of whether his effort was up to par throughout his career, I still wouldn't agree he was a waste of talent. He was a joy to watch. As an NBA basketball player, he put people in the seats. His dunks were revolutionary, his layups were mind-bending, his buzzer beaters were breath-taking. I'm just trying to figure out why so many folks see these plays and instead of saying, "Wow, crazy how he could do all of that", they say, "Geez, he should have done that a lot more." But maybe I'm just too much of a glass half full type of guy.

Derrick Coleman was a waste of talent and probably the biggest waste in the NBA.

I think we can all agree that Vince isn't nowhere NEAR level of being a waste, not that I think he was a waste anyway.

It's a waste because if he had heart or desire, he would have been way better than he was.

I just like watching players who CAN do amazing things, actually DO them.

A "waste" doesn't just mean they did absolutely nothing. I think Lamar Odom is a huge waste of talent too. And, surprisingly, Shaq too. If Shaq had someone else's work ethic, he would have probably been the player not named Jordan of all time.

I suppose this is where my hang up lies. When was it decided that Vince Carter had absolutely no heart or desire? I get this feeling the obsessive, most desire-ridden all-time greats were his measuring stick and anything less than that was thereby a waste.

Again, I feel no one stumbles into the NBA and averages 27, 6, and 4. There must be drive, heart, and desire behind such numbers. But surely, I understand and agree there are variable forms of desire. People often say Michael Jordan was not only the most skilled, but also the hardest working (and famously hard on teammates in practice). So Vince Carter wasn't that. Fair enough. Had he been, would he have been better? Yes. But I don't see how we couldn't say the same thing about 98% of every basketball player to come through the NBA, college, and high school ranks.

To call someone a waste because they didn't achieve their absolute maximum peak potential is a daunting accusation. What number of people can reach such standards? I understand what you're saying when you suggest Shaquille O'Neal could have worked harder and been even better than he was, but I still don't see how he was anywhere within the realm of being a waste. In truth, anyone who has ever consciously not gone 100% all the time in every drill of every practice and did not devote their entire life to improving their game is not achieving their maximum potential. I still don't find that a waste.

I just like watching players who CAN do amazing things, actually DO them.
For whatever it's worth, that's why I liked Vince Carter in the first place. Coming out of college, I remembered him being more of a sidekick to Antawn than being what he'd end up becoming. The plays he made in the league is what drew me in (the double pump reverse against Indiana being the ice breaker). For nearly 10 years, he was can't-miss television for me. I was watching every night to see if he may have pulled off a spectacular move I hadn't seen before.

As a fan of the dunk, I thoroughly enjoyed his complete rewriting of what sort of dunks were possible, both in contests and in games. As a fan of around-the-basket acrobatics, I also felt he was top notch. Many players pull off the maneuver now, but at the time his 360 layups appeared novel and historically smooth. His numerous buzzer beaters and clutch moments? I fail to see how Vince Carter was an example of someone who could do amazing things but didn't do them. In my house, he was doing them nearly every night between 1999 and 2007.

I agree with Matrix. I went back and watched some of his old stuff over the summer and he was ridiculously gifted. I think talent wise, he had all of the ability to be the best player to play. You don't see guys gifted like him. He could jump higher than Mike, Kobe, T-Mac. I watched a couple games from that Philly series and in his third season, he was a complete offensive dynamo. He could score out of the triple threat, he could attack the basket, he had a post game, he had a jump shot, he could handle the basketball and had no problem creating space off the dribble. But at 24 years old, he seemingly just didn't get better.

There's something about just watching him play that rubs me wrong. Maybe it's his body language. Or maybe his lack of emotion. He looks disinterested most of the time. He doesn't even look like he's competing. On defense he just stands around, doesn't even know what a defensive stance looks like. He plays so unaggressively it's painful to watch. God knows he could have whipped anybody that tried to guard him but most of the time he decided he was going to settle for bad jumpshots.

Again, I feel no one stumbles into the NBA and averages 27, 6, and 4. There must be drive, heart, and desire behind such numbers.
