    Protected Picks

Im gonna keep this short and simple, what is a lottery protected pick and how does it work? I'm a big follower of the NBA but never understood what this is. Could someone help me out? I've googled it but it only made me even more confused .

So I figured my OS fam could give me a hand.

    Re: Protected Picks

If the Bobcats trade the Kings a 2012 top 5 lottery protected draft pick and in the 2012 draft the Bobcats get a top 5 pick that means the Kings will have to wait another year. If the Bobcats again in 2013 get a top 5 pick, the Kings will have to wait again. If in 2014 the pick lands on the #6, the pick is finally owned by the Kings.

As the topic says, it protects picks if they're rated high from giving that ownership to another team.

And just to add to what he said sometimes the protection changes by the year. Like for example it might be top 10 protected in 2012,and 13. Then top 5 in 2014 and then just top 3 in 2015. It just depends on what is agreed to in the trade. Those are the only ways a pick can be protected.
