Hell yeah...that's why "Mr. Clutch", Jerry West, gets my vote. Busted up, he'd STILL light you up for 35.

Cats I saw growing up - Willis Reed, Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, Wes Unseld, Nate Thurmond, Maurice Lucas were as tough as they come. Cowens and Silas should be arrested for what they did to opposing players, lol. They put the Beef Brothers(Rick Mahorn & Jeff Ruland from the old Washington Bullets) to shame.

Could also throw Antonio Davis in there as well. Both of them were no joke on that Indiana front line.

Oakley for sure. Laimbeer was a **** but he was tough as well.

Reggie Miller was tough too, couldn't win in a fight though.

Bill Laimbeer came to mind to me.

His push in the back to Larry Krystkoviak seals the deal for me.

Re: Who is the toughest player in NBA history?

I’m going to go a slightly different direction and name some guys who were “Mentally” tough.

Isaiah Thomas – For this guy to 6’1”, be one of the most hated players in NBA history, suffer heart breaking playoff losses to the Celtics in 1987 and Lakers in 1988 AND still lead his team to two championships by beating Bird-lead teams, Magic-lead teams and Jordan-lead teams in their championship runs is amazing.

Michael Jordan – When he first came into the league he couldn't go to his left. Quickly resolved that by averaging 37 points per game in 1987… Check. Then they questioned him on his defense. Was the defensive player of the year in 1988…Check. He was a gunner and couldn’t pass. Was inserted as the PG in 1989 and was 10th in the league in assist with 8 per game and lead the underdog Bulls to the conference finals that year… Check. Couldn't hit the 3-point shot. Hit 92 threes in 1990…Check. Then the ultimate, couldn’t win the championship as the league leading scorer. Blew that out of the water with 6 championships and lead the league in scoring each of those six seasons…CHECK, CHECK and double CHECK.

Magic Johnson – When Magic lost the 1984 Finals, there were talks like his career was over. He went from being ‘Magic’ to ‘Tragic’. Why? I have no idea. This was a guy who had already two championships BUT Magic was the designated whipping boy. So what does he do? He leads the Lakers to the championship in 1985 and beats the Celtics at the Garden to clinch it, the first time another team besides the Celtics win the championship on the Boston floor. Then he decides to take two more championships(1987,1988) and his name is put back into the conversation as one of the best players of the 80’s.

Bill Russell – Although Russell was not the first black basketball player, he was the first SUCCESSFUL black player in the NBA. During the era he played in(50’s & 60’s) and the city he played in(Boston) he had to endure a lot of racism. Unlike Jackie Robinson, Russell spoke his mind on a lot of things and was outcast by many in Boston and around the NBA. And despite the fact that he had to face all this, Russell still ended up with 8 championships and arguably the best player in his era. And even outside of the racism he had to endure, he was notably compared to another center in Wilt Chamberlain, who was physically better than Russell. Russell however did not let this comparison get to him and decided that it’s not him against Wilt BUT the Celtics against the Warriors/76ers/Lakers. OH, and let’s not forget he was the first black coach in the NBA WHILE HE WAS STILL PLAYING. And he’s the first black coach to win the NBA Championship WHILE HE WAS STILL PLAYING. And let’s not forget it was still the 60’s and Wilt was still playing. Can’t get any mentally tougher than that.
I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm X

How do you measure this kind of question?

Lemme guess... there is a stat for that?

you know, if we're going to go mental toughness...I have to throw out Kwame Brown. To go through what that guy has gone through for 10 years, now...steady criticism, steady talk about how he was the worst #1 pick ever, etc....for that guy to keep going at it...takes some toughness.
