What's more impressive to you? 81 or 100?
Since today is the 6 year anniversary of Kobe's amazing night, I have to ask this question. To me, Wilt Chamberlain is the single most dominant basketball player ever, followed by MJ. To me, the 100 point game is more impressive. No 3 point line, quadruple teamed at time, 28/32 from the foul line etc.
So which game, to you, is more impressive? Wilt's legendary 100 point night in Hershey, or Kobe's 81 against the Raptors in 2006."To the last minute, to the last second, to the last man, we fight"Tags: None -

I can't really speak on Wilt because it was way before my time. 100 points is impressive no matter how you slice it. However, I can say that Kobe had two of the craziest scoring outbursts I've ever seen.
The 81-point game

I don't see how anyone could say 81 especially seeing as Kobe is a Guard and Wilt was a Center. That alone makes it more impressive.
The real question is what's more impressive between 81 and 69, but that'd bring up a whole 'nother can of worms.Comment

Re: What's more impressive to you? 81 or 100?
I tend to find both overblown. At those stages in their careers, Wilt & Kobe were 1 & 1a on the all-time list of gratuitous ball hogs.
I'm unimpressed by Wilt's 100 because he played against FAR inferior competition throughout most of his career (Jabbar was the only guy his size, and that was late in his career. Russell was the only one who matched up with him athletically, which is why he bested him several times.) Take into account that the Warriors fouled the Knicks several times towards the end of the game, so Wilt could get the ball back. Also, take into account that this was during the 1962 season, a season when the league was at it's most wide open pace. Look at Wilt's boxscore from that game. Yeah, 28 for 32 from the line is really impressive, but considering how "dominant" he was and how small his competition was, how impressed are you by his 36 for 63 shooting in that game?
Kobe, on the other hand, was the right combination of scorer, ball hog, & ******* at the time. He had no problem with firing up 40 shots per game. Then, take into account that the Raptors were 29th in the league in points allowed. Their perimeter defenders for that game were Jalen Rose, Morris Peterson, Mike James, Joey Graham, & Jose Calderon..I love Bill Simmons' line about these guys defensively - "they couldn't stop a David Thompson nose bleed." Give Vince Carter or Tracy McGrady the same mentality that Kobe had, they could've dropped 80 on that team in 2006. Not to mention the era in which he did this - no handchecking, and if you breath on a star, they go to the line.
I'm sure I'll catch flack for my opinion on these two games, but I just think they are both very overblown in the minds of basketball fans & historians. I don't completely dismiss both of them, but I don't stand in awe whenever I think about them.
If I had to pick one that I'm more impressed by, I'd have to say Kobe's 81. For a perimeter player to do it, that's insane. But, personally, I'm more impressed by his 62 points in 3 quarters against Dallas that season. Remember, Dallas went to the Finals in 2006..

81 is more impressive. The level of competition that Kobe played against was much better than who wilt played against. Wilt Chamberlain was matched up with 2 different centers during the game. Darrall Imhoff and Dave Budd. Have any of you heard of them? because i didn't until i looked up the box score for that game.

Kobe's 81.
Agree with what st0rmb said about Wilt's 100. Different time, different era. The final score to that game was 169-147... Wilt's team was up by 19 going into the 4th, it wasn't really that competitive. Knicks were playing without their starting center, Wilt was being guarded by a 6'10 220 lb center and a 6'6 205 lb center. And I don't see how scoring 100 as a center is that much more impressive than 81 as a guard. You're 7 feet tall, have a huge physical advantage over whoever's guarding you, the vast majority of your shots are coming from right at the basket...Edit: there was offensive goaltending then. Regardless, though.
Kobe's 81 actually comes in the flow of the game. Yall talk about how bad the Raptors were but this is probably Kobe's worst team of his career, starting Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, Lamar Odom, and Kwame Brown. The Lakers were actually getting embarrassed in this game. He only had 26 at halftime I think and they were down double digits. They were down by 18 to the Raptors at one point in the second half. Then Kobe took over. It's not like the Lakers were force feeding Kobe trying to see how many he could score. He just wanted to win that badly.Last edited by Hassan Darkside; 01-22-2012, 08:26 PM.[NYK|DAL|VT]

Not to take away from Kobe's 81 but this man speaks the truth! To me that is more impressive than dropping on the Raptors.Comment

You can say what you want about Wilt's 100-pt game, but a guy who shot 50% from the FT, shot an amazing 87.5% that night. Was there another 50% FT shooter who for one night shot so much at such a high %? Seriously, it's like Stockton dunking from the FT line during a game. What are the odds?My Specs:

I would Say Jordan's 69 against the Cav's were more impressive. Shot better percentages, grabbed 18 rebounds dished out 6 assists and stole 4.
