    All-Time Matchup Thread

Ok so after doing a search I didn't find anything like this so I figured, why not? If this is unnecessary please close it.

    HOW IT WORKS

I put a matchup between two players, teams, duos, coaches, anything basketball related, the next person to post answers on the matchup I posted, and posts another one etc. Please no arguments, feel free to give why you feel that way however.

    So to start things off,

    Durant vs. Pippen?

if i follow your logic ill say that pippen was and is better than durant for now because he was an absolute terror on defense in addition to scoring 20+ a game while also being the de facto point guard for those bulls teams... so we also give you a match-up right? ill say shaq vs. dwight

      Re: All-Time Matchup Thread

Pippen was the better player. Hands down.

The only category Durant has him beat in is shooting (not scoring, just pure shooting.) When Pippen was asked to score, he could put up similar scoring numbers to Durant. Scottie was better at getting to the basket, and could finish better than Durant (in my opinion).

Pippen was the 3rd best passing forward ever, behind Bird & LeBron. He revolutionized the point forward label. Durant is a below average passer.

Ball handling could be considered a wash, I suppose. Durant has sicker handles, but Pippen was surer with the ball and made better decisions.

Pippen was INFINITELY better than Durant on defense, as he was the greatest perimeter defender ever. He could also guard any position 1-4, maybe 5 on some teams. He was a great help side defender, and made smarter plays on the defensive end. Durant does seem like he's on his way to being a better shot blocker & rebounder, but that doesn't make up for the overall defensive difference.

Here's a matchup that I'm interested in getting someone's opinion on:

(and I'll chime in later with who I think's better)

      Shawn Marion vs James Worthy

well id say worthy but im really unsure of this one since marion is a better rebounder and defender, but sometimes i think the only reason he scored over 10 points while with the suns is cause of nash.. you could probably argue that worthy had magic but he could go get his own shot if he needed to, also he was a clutch player (they didnt call him big game james for no reason lol)

I don't think Stan Van would do this for his players...

You realize Shawn Marion scored over 10 ppg in EVERY year he was with the Suns, right? Not just the ones he was with Nash. He averaged 21 in 2002-2003 without him. He's also never averaged less than 10 in his entire career so that makes absolutely no sense. Not trying to start an argument or anything, just putting that up there for arguments sake against Worthy.

I've made the case for Shawn Marion in another thread; I think if he had played with Magic in the '80s, he would have done the exact same thing that Worthy did, and would have been a better defender and rebounder.

CP3. Better passer, better leader (to this point), still a better defender (at this point, though that gap is closing), more clutch, more reliable shot. Ask this again in 3 years, and I'm sure my answer changes.

                    Blake Griffin or Shawn Kemp?

I'd take Kemp, but only because you're asking today. I think it's kind of unfair to put Griffin and other guys around his level (years 1 or 2 of playing) in these type of comparisons. His potential would put him above Kemp but he's got a lot of developing left to do.

                          Definitely Chris Paul.

He has a more all around game than Stockton

Stockton. One of the best players and depends on who a top 3 point guard all time. Could get it done on both ends of the court.

But, so can Paul. And, Paul is a better scorer and, arguably, shooter.

and I'll say this, Stockton is, in my opinion, the best, most consistent passer ever. From a standpoint of delivering the ball on target, where the offensive player wants it, on a pass after pass basis? No one better..
