How Would You Re-Draft The 2009 NBA Draft Lottery

We are here 3 years after a strong draft class. Some players have turned out to be bust, some have exceeded our expectations. What players should've been drafted earlier, and which should've been drafted later (*cough cough* Hasheem Thabeet)

*Please try to take into consideration that the teams needed to draft a player at a certain position at the time*

    Here was the original draft
    1. Los Angeles Clippers: Blake Griffin
    2.Memphis Grizzles: Hasheem Thabeet
    3. Oklahoma City Thunder: James Harden
    4. Sacramento Kings: Tyreke Evans
    5. Minesota Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio
    6. Minesota Timberwolves: Johnny Flynn
    7. Golden State Warriors: Stephen Curry
    8. New York Knicks: Jordan Hill
    9.Toronto Raptors: Demar DeRozan
    10. Milwaukee Bucks: Brandon Jennings
    11. New Jersey Nets: Terrence Williams
    12. Charlotte Bobcats: Gerald Henderson
    13. Indiana Pacers: Tyler Hansbrough
    14. Phoenix Suns: Earl Clark

*Feel free to use players that were drafted outside of the 2009 NBA draft lottery*

Notable Players Drafted out of the Lottery include:
    Jrue Holiday
    Ty Lawson
    Jeff Teague
    Eric Maynor
    Darren Collison
    Omri Casspi
    Rodrigue Beaubois
    Taj Gibson
    Toney Douglas
    Christian Eyenga
    DeJuan Blair
    Jodie Meeks

Would Memphis really get Harden after already having a player of somewhat similar game in Mayo?

My only nitpick with your list lol

Re: How Would You Re-Draft The 2009 NBA Draft Lottery

Ok, let's see. I'll approach this as if I'm the GM of each team, and I'll consider my previous draft picks, and "current" roster (as it was in 2009).

        1. Blake Griffin

        2. The Grizz had just ended up with Mayo in the previous draft (even though they should've kept Love), so no need for Harden. I'd draft Ricky Rubio. I'd have to wait 2 years on him, giving me plenty of time to get a read on Conley. In 2 years, Rubio is likely starting, and Conley is either gone, or backing him up.

        3. OKC had just drafted Russell Westbrook, so no need for a PG. Instead, give me James Harden. That one's worked out pretty well.

        4. Sacramento was in need of a great all-around point guard, so I'll take Stephen Curry. Passer, shooter, scorer, solid defender.

        5. I think they took the right route by drafting a point guard (maybe not 2 in a row, but whatever). So, I'll take a point guard, as well - Jrue Holiday. He is a better passer than the other point guards on the board, and he can run some beautiful plays with Kevin Love.

        6. Well, the T'Wolves get to choose again, and we don't need a point guard, so instead, I'd take Tyreke Evans. He'd be free to play his natural position, and be one of our primary scorers, without having to worry about distributing the ball.

        7. At the time, Golden State was hurting for a big man. So, I'll be taking Taj Gibson. Athletic & can run the floor. He's not a true big man, but he's a solid complimentary piece for Ellis.

        8. New York was in desperate need of a point guard who could play D'Antoni's style. The solution? Ty Lawson

        9. I actually like Toronto's pick of DeRozan. I think it's been a decent pick up. They had a solid point guard in Calderon, and a good big man in Bargnani, so they were in need of an athletic perimeter guy.

        10. Milwaukee needed a good perimeter scorer, but also needed a point guard. So, I think Brandon Jennings was a good selection.

        11. The Nets had just traded Ryan Anderson & Vince Carter, so they were hurting for some perimeter scoring to help out Brook Lopez & Devin Harris. So, I would choose Marcus Thornton

        12. The Bobcats had just drafted Augustin, and had just lost Okafor. But, they still had Gerald Wallace. So, I think they needed a hard nosed big man. Tyler Hansbrough.

        13. The Pacers went the right route by picking up Hansbrough, but with him off the board, I pick DeJuan Blair

        14. Phoenix is always a great destination for athletic, scoring wingmen. So, with the last pick of the lottery, I would have chosen Jodie Meeks.

          Completely right! Haha.

I just ranked them not according to need at all..

But, I always say, in the NBA you always draft best available and shouldn't care about need.

All I know is that I was high on harden and very low on Thabeet...

My only complaint was Philly drafting Jrue instead of Lawson. Both are playing damn good (lawson better scorer) but I like Jrue for his size.

So its pretty even for me now.

i don't wanna go through all the possible scenarios... but what if Mini Soda took Derozan instead of Flynn....

building around Rubio, Derozan, Beasley, Love, and that big bear guy the center who seems solid.

Well for the Wizards, wouldn't have traded that 5th pick for Mike Miller and Randy Foye

Ty Lawson being unanimously considered a worse prospect than Flynn is crazy looking back.

I ragged on Jrue endlessly coming out of UCLA, glad he proved me wrong.

I think Flynn is a better player than he's shown so far in the NBA, but even I, a big Syracuse fan (and current student), thought that Lawson would be a better pro. I thought Lawson might end up being the best PG in that class.

I think Lawson will be a top 5 pg for a number of years soon.

If I were the OKC GM I would have most likely taken Gibson over Beaubois and not traded for Mullens. He would be a big improvement over Perkins!
                      Could you imagine this lineup
                      Westbrook
                      Harden
                      Durant
                      Gibson
                      Ibaka

BTW, could someone explain the Maynor trade to me?

Incidentally you guys should remember that Blair had just hurt his knee perty badly at the end of the tourney and nobody knee if he would play in the NBA at that point. Just happened to be a flier that worked out for SAS!
Bobcats win 35th game. Some really weird news in the NBA. A betting scandal is revealed! But... that is not the strangest news!

I wouldnt take Gibson, if i were the Thunder back in 2009 seeing as how they had Jeff Green producing pretty well
