The debate is pointless unless you specify between...
      a) born outside of the USA
      b) 1st time playing in the USA was in the NBA
      Tampa Bay Buccaneers
      Dallas Mavericks

It's Hakeem Olajuwon and it's not even close. I don't know how he wasn't the first name listed on the poll. He didn't come to the USA until college and wasn't even really recruited. He was only offered a visit to work out for the coach as favor. So that cancels out the whole argument of growing up in the USA despite being born elsewhere. Nobody on this poll is even close to the level of the Dream.

Side not I don't count Tim Duncan because he is from the US Virgin Islands. He has been a US citizen his entire life.

Dream easily. Top 2 center of all time. However, out of the 4 you gave us, had to go with Sabonis slightly over Dirk. I like a well rounded player on both sides, and Dirks D just doesn't cut it.

Depends on the details of the question. If we're looking at their "USA" or "NBA" careers, Sabonis' D was that he was big, and his offense wouldn't put him anywhere close to Dirk. Obviously, if we're looking at his entire career that's a different story... and this is ignoring the fact that Dirk's D isn't anywhere near as bad as it's made out to be.

That offense worked because Olajuwon was a dreadnaught scorer who invited collapsing defenses. Said defenses were so stretched out of shape that they allowed him to make uncomplicated out passes to dead eye three-ballers. His passes were indeed too loopish and off target when passing on the move. But still, a fantastic player.

Would have been better to post the top 3 or 5 non US (including citizenship) basketball players of all time.

That way the topic could have included, for example, the likes of Detlef Schrempf, Sarunas Marciulonis among Dirk, Nash and company, and thus avoided the Olajuwon's and Wilkins' "conflicts".

                  Just my opinion.

The only reason anyone says anything about Dirk's D is because he's 7 foot tall and he's not a shot blocker. At this point in his career he's a fine defender. Nothing special, but nothing so bad as to knock him down for it.
