Re: All Time all Defensive team

I'm noticing people are doing it by positions really, which is cool but when I made the thread it was more so who would be just the best 5 combination of defenders on the court in NBA history that's why I said originally you can have all point guards or centers on your team, i know extreme examples but I said that to get a certain point across because some guys can play multiple positions defensively but if position by position is the way your looking at it then that's fine. I also see a lot of just stars on certain peoples list which is cool but just to mix it up here's a list i thought of.

      John Starks
      Tony Allen
      Dennis Rodman
      Charles Oakley
      Kendrick Perkins

Just wanted to give some role players some love, probably not the best defensive 5 but pretty good and who says star players necessarily play the best defense any way. Just want to change it up a little I guess because the list are so similar with other posts that were written before.

Also wanted to write if you see a list of great defenders but the combination of the 5 that I picked or someone else has a glaring weakness, like my team for example is to short or slow, etc. feel free to comment, I would like to know how some of these great defensive combinations would get attacked if your coaching against them as well.

What about guys like Bobby Jobes, Jerry Lucas, and Billy Cunningham.. I give honorable mention votes to those guys.. Especially Jones who may not have been the greatest one on one defender but was a great team defender with a great IQ for the game.. Jones would make my all time hustle team, dude gave 110% every night.. And all 3 of those guys could control the defensive glass despite being undersized.. Especially Lucas

I admire Ben Wallace's abilities.. He was undersized and worked so hard and was an absolute stud.. That being said I didn't put him on my list because he was smaller, he had horrible hands, and because he never looked like a great defensive player until his whole team was great defensively.. I think he appeared to be a better defender that what he actually was simply because every player on that team was a good defender.. A great defensive team.. He is a good shot blocker though...

As for Howard he isn't really all that great defensively.. He just gets VERY good block numbers.. But there are plenty of guys in NBA history who have had good and better numbers than his.. If you were to include him simply for that then you would have to include all them as well.. I will give Dwight this though, in being pretty much the only dominant big man around in today's NBA he if definitely a game changer on defense.. Teams tend to alter their play styles and game plans when playing against Dwight.. However he fouls too much which also hurts not only him but his teams defense..

Re: All Time all Defensive team

Here is my all-time defensive team based on the players I saw play. So you won't see Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain or Dave DeBusschere on my list because I never seen them play.

PG: Michael Cooper - Versatile perimeter defender who can effectively guard 1's, 2's and 3's. Never ate up the defensive stats sheet but all he did was frustrate the hell out of whoever he was guarding with his long arms.

SG: Michael Jordan - In regards to his strength, athleticism and quick hands, not only was physical aspect to his defensive game was great but the mental aspect. The way he anticipates his opponents moves was remarkable.

SF: Dennis Rodman - This is in reference to the Dennis Rodman during the 'Bad Boy' years. Rodman during that time was the most gifted defender I've seen play. Was able to guard EVERY player in the league effectively.

PF: Hakeem Olajuwon - Listed as a center with the size of a power forward but could effectively guard both. His hands and quickness rivals those of elite guards and is the best I've seen from a big.

C: Dikembe Mutombo - Was a real tactician when it comes to the art of shot blocking. He was more from the Bill Russell school of shot blocking where he would block the shot to keep the ball in play.
I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm X

Seeing people say Harper, Jordan, Pippen and Rodman make me just admire how great those Bulls teams were in their 2nd 3peat.

For sure, and they were all better defenders because of each other.. Amazing team defense
