Maybe being Chinese isn't why Yao speaks funny?

Being deaf in one ear probably helps his speech more than hurts it. Singers often cover one ear in order to find the right pitch.

Well I should give some perspective from a deaf person tho to be honest i'm more deaf then Yao but I wear hearing aids so I can understand why he may have problems understanding things during a game. The tends to get all garbled up in a loud and noisy setting which is the case for almost every NBA arena.

He may hear words differently then what they really are so it makes understanding what teamates and coaches are saying a bit of a problem. I'm sure that Yao has his own way of combating those issues tho. After all you can't make it this far without SOME kind of way to combat one's deafness.
