As a native of the city let me try to give some perspective on the Hornets as they relate to Charlotte.
Before 1989, we didn't have a pro sports team and the biggest thing in this state is probably College Basketball and with some segments of the population NASCAR. During that first season 1989-90 the Hornets went 20-62, but they seemed to always have a knack for the dramatic and played harder than any team I can ever remember watching. The Hive as it become known was the loudest arena I was ever in, and the team was filled with role players basically. Think about the OKC crowd making noise for a terrible team and you have a sense of what is was like here then.
Fast forward a few years and the team start the climb out of the cellar with LJ and Zo and they even knocked the mighty Celtics out of the playoffs.
I could go on, but the bottom line is this city fell in love with the team because it was our first pro team. Not to mention it was a Basketball team which is like a religion in this region. Then when the whole Shinn thing hit the fan it was so painful for me (I was in California at the time) that I wept.
Glad we have the team we have now in Charlotte, but the Bobcat name never really jived with the locals. We still felt violated when the team left and it never quite felt the same. If Jordan changes the name back, it would be one of the better business decisions he would ever make.
Sorry for the length, just wanted to offer some perspective.
