    Your Perfect Starting 5

Thought this would be an interesting discussion topic that we could throw around. The general Premise of the topic is to make the "Perfect" starting 5. when I say perfect I mean the starting 5 that (In your opinion) could work the best together. If your wondering why I put this topic out their, it is because I want other peoples input on the idea. That Being said here is my 5

    Point Guard : John Stockton
    Shooting Guard : Michael Jordan
    Small Forward : Scottie Pippen
    Power Forward : Tim Duncan
    Center : Bill Walton

I've seen 4 out of the 5 play in my life time and I watched many classic NBA games throughout the years to get a good feel on Walton's game. I really think The lineup works well together. Thoughts? Opinions? Whats your starting 5?

Perfectly healthy and at the peak of their careers:

    Point guard: Oscar Robertson
    Shooting guard: Michael Jordan
    Small forward: LeBron James
    Power forward: Tim Duncan
    Center: Yao Ming

Yao as my center simply because of his ridiculous height advantage he would have over almost everyone. Its easy to forget how dominant he was when he was completely healthy.
    NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
    NBA: Dallas Mavericks
    MLB: Texas Rangers
    NHL: Dallas Stars
    NCAA: Alabama Crimson Tide

I feel Like Oscar wouldn't mesh well with the team but I like the other four. Concerning your point on Yao I would have to agree. Yao when healthy was a force.

        Small Forward: Larry Bird
        Power Forward: Tim Duncan
        Center: Hakeem Olajuwon

I like this to be my team for some reasons great defense, unselfishness and it has Michael Jordan on it.
Why John Stockton? I picked him because I think he is one tough guy in his size and the most unselfish guy in the NBA shoots only if he is really wide open. I was thinking of picking Magic but I like defense.
Why Michael Jordan? Greatest scorer of all time and arguably the GOAT.
Why Larry Bird? Like John Stockton he was unselfish, underrated defender, and will space the floor so well if you would double Jordan it's easy points.
Why Tim Duncan? Mr. Fundamental, great defender, possibly the greatest power forward of all time and he isn't done yet.
Why Hakeem Olajuwon? Great rim protector like Duncan, saw him dominate so many good-to-great centers.

PG - John Stockton, perfect combination of distribution and tough defense.
          SG - Michael Jordan
SF - Larry Bird, great passer and will get a lot of open looks, also provides a tough underrated defender.
PF - Karl Malone, great on the boards and doin the dirty work down low.
C- David Robinson, excellent athleticism at the position, doesn't need the ball in his hands on offense.

Really wanted a complete team without a lot of duplication in roles. Which is why players like Duncan, Olajuwon, Walton and other got passed up. On offense I've got the best pick and roll combo in history, the greatest one on one scorer in history, and the greatest shooter of all time. Defense, Stockton and Jordan will make life heck on the outside, and anyone that manages to drive to the paint will have to deal with two no nonsense bruisers.

Just for fun I've got a second five that'd be probably my most fun to watch play because they're going to run, run and then run some more, fly over anyone and fill the highlight reel:

          PG - Steve Nash
          SG - Michael Jordan
          SF - Vince Carter
          PF - Dominique Wilkins
          C - Amare Stoudemire

I agree with your point on Yao too, that healthy Yao used to outplay Dwight Howard every time they play each other.

PG:Rajon Rondo(want my PG to be puerly a passer and a good defender)
                SG:Michael Jordan(Self explanatory)
SF:Tracy McGrady(Magic years, had he stayed heathy his whole career I think he wouldve been better then LeBron)
PF:Kevin Garnett(Timberwolves years, just a pure beast back then)
                C: Kareem Abdul-Jabar(Bucks years

I like this thread, I'll post my 5 later..

But do you guys really think Larry Bird is a good 2nd to 3rd option type of guy? Or just a good stand around and shoot spot up jumpers? That's not really his game. You can't just pick a guy who could shoot good and say "ok this will be my spot up shooter" it doesn't work that way. Reggie Miller wouldn't even be effective that way.

I'm not saying he isn't worthy of making an All-Time starting 5 team, I think he's probably a top 5 player ever, but that's just an odd role to give him.

Especially when the rest of the team isn't built around his play style either. If the other guys picked were different it would make much more sense.

Also, 24 had it right by picking a center like Walton to pair with the other 4.. Most of the other picks the guys were successful because the offense was ran through them..

I'm assuming everybody here would be running their offenses through Jordan right? So why grab a big man that needs constant touches to be effective? Or that would be trying to post up while Jordan was wanting to attack?

Walton was a passing big, a type of guy who could score but was good at making all the guys around him better. Not to mention the guy was a hustle machine.

                      My 5:

                      PG - John Stockton
                      SG - Michael Jordan
                      SF - John Havlicek/James Worthy
                      PF - Tim Duncan
                      C - Bill Russell

Stockton - all time leader in assists and steals. Arguably the greatest "true PG" of all time. Good offensively and defensively, and a very hard worker. Jordan won 6 championships with PGs being the only outside shooting threat so he should be fine playing along side Stockton.

Jordan - obvious reasons. Greatest player of all time. My go to scoring option.

Hondo/Worthy - I couldn't pick just one of these two.
Hondo because he was great offensively, great defensively, and one of the hardest working players in the league. Never had to be the go-to guy on offense, was at times even a 6th man. Peaked at 29PPG, 9RPG, and 7.5APG, the ultimate team player, an 8 time champion and a finals MVP winner.
Worthy was another guy who didn't have to be "the guy". Was often a third option to Magic and Kareem, but shown on many occasions he could carry the scoring load himself. He once even won the finals MVP for the Lakers. 3 time champion and effective playing along side other great stars.. Also won a national championship at UNC with Jordan. ALWAYS raised his game in the playoffs earning his nickname "Big Game James" One of the few players who could actually play better in big playoff games than he did in the regular season.

Duncan - greatest power forward of all time. Great offensively and defensively. Which was something other great PFs (Malone and Barkley) were not. Also has the habit of coming up big in the clutch and winning championships.. Also a guy who proved he can be very effective without being the teams go-to scoring option. Great team player.

Russell was arguably the greatest rebounder and shot blocker ever. Best defensive big man of all time.. Great passer, either in the offense or as an outlet pass to start a break. Ultimate team player, never had to be the teams go-to scoring option or at times even 2nd or 3rd option.. 11 time champion, 5 time league MVP. The ultimate workhorse and team leader.

--> not sure if its allowed since the thread says only 5 guys but if Hondo could be my sixth man I would make that my line-up.. If not then I'll have to stay undecided with Hondo/Worthy lol

Bill Russell is the full credit answer for C. How could you not have this winner in the middle?? If you have Jordan and others, you just need rebounding, shot blocking, and ... well, winning. See Russell. Jabar took over 40 shots in more than 100 games. If your perfect 5 is going to share the ball, who better than Russell?

Not discounting Bill Russell at all consider he was the best of his era but Russell wouldn't thrive in the NBA today like he did back then. He's 6'9 215, He would probably still grab 10-12 Boards a night and maybe block a couple shots but the games much different now then it was back then. I can't imagine him getting 20 + rebounds every game.
