well i also think the pacers deserve a spot in the second tier. The way Paul george man handled lebron last night made them a contender in the east. I think they can counter almost any east team other than chicago, especially if George can defend lebron like that on a regular basis.

Haven't convinced me yet, we'll have to wait until the Playoffs. Yes they did beat Miami at home but remember a few days ago the old Boston Celtics put a 19 point beatdown on them. The regular season really is meaningless at this point.

And George can't defend LeBron that well on a regular basis, nobody can.

name 5 guys who have ever guarded lebron like that once. thats my point.

also, what team other than the celtics gave the heat more issues then the thunder in the playoffs? thats right, the pacers had a 2 game lead as im sure you remember. The Pacers are a Young team like the thunder are, who only get better, the heat, like my celtics, have players who will get better, and players who will get worse. its the way it works with age man.

All i can say is, the heat definitely wont be like the bulls were with MJ and Pipped, they just dont have the magic, and overall i feel the league is more competitive.

Once? There's plenty, but you said on a regular basis, like in a Playoff series. In a Playoff series..I'd have to say the best defender LeBron has went up against has to be Shawn Marion. There's no way Paul George could guard LeBron that well for 7 games, and besides, he'd be guarding D Wade, Granger would guard LeBron.

Pacers had a 2-1 lead, we had no Chris Bosh, and once Wade had his knee drained, it was over, that series ended in Game 4. I wouldn't automatically assume young teams get better, this is one of the biggest misconceptions around, Hibbert is worse than he was last year, we don't know about Granger yet but I think it's safe to say he'll be about the same, and Paul George is definitely improving.

Nobody said they were going to be like Jordan and the Bulls. They're going to be LeBron and the Heat, and what that is remains to be seen.

im sour after the heat won the nba championship last year because of bogus calls in the celtics series honestly, i remember being absolutely blown away at some of the calls, especially one game where paul pierce, our clutch 4th quarter guy got fouled out then lebron did the same thing and didnt et called for it.

that series pissed me off, and if I didnt hate the heat, I hate them now.

Im not sure if the pacers are going to beat the heat, but they have a better chance then they did last year, and so do the bulls.

and ****ing 2011.....like you guys couldnt just beat us and leave you had to take the one thing we had going for us with you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he4OY6gJNX4

and the fact that ray allen went to the heat pisses me off.

            ok im done raging sorta.

There are bad calls in every game, we all know this, I think that Game 6 by LeBron gave us the momentum we needed to finally take them down in game 7.

What do you think about the Knicks? They have a great passing team, which is Miami's weakness, along with good rebounding.

They called A TECHNICAL ON RAY ALLEN. that man wouldnt hurt a fly, then their response is to literally call the entire team for being emotionally bothered.

it was horse ****. look at the mans foul stats. http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/9/ray-allen

and no i dont think new york stands a chance. I hate to be that guy, but melo will never win a ring, I dont care who is on his team, the man isnt a team player and he never will be.

Re: Just starting to become a basketball fan...

As for the Pacers, The Wizards beat the Heat too. Winning once (or even twice) against a good team doesn't really mean anything at all, especially since the Miami Heat are the NBA's most prolific "wake me up when the playoffs start" team. All their losses should frankly be thrown away and ignored.

The Knicks and Nets: The Knicks have definitely outplayed the Nets to-date, but I think if you watched either team it's pretty obvious that the Knicks were overachieving and the Nets were underachieving. If the Knicks can make this Chandler/Anthony/Stoudemire thing work long-term, they belong with the greats... but that's a big "if."

OP already hit the nail on the head about the Bulls... if Derrick Rose is 80% of his former self this season, they are one of the best teams in the NBA... but even if his recovery is completely successful, it still takes a long time to get back into full basketball shape and rhythm... so I just don't see him reaching that level performance wise... next season definitely, but not this season.

The Clippers have frontcourt issues, but the Miami Heat have perimeter shooting issues, and OKC has issues penetrating consistently. Even elite teams will have issues, and I don't buy into the silly notion that playoff games magically slow down by default, and that suddenly the Clippers won't be able to force turnovers or run fast breaks.

Keep it on topic, fellas. Anyone else got any incite into things the OP can look for or pay attention to to bring him closer to the enjoyment of the rest of the NBA die hards? Maybe beyond just what teams to watch but maybe some things to read or follow online? I thought the clip AllstarDaDon added was a nice addition.

Re: Just starting to become a basketball fan...

Honestly if he already plays the video game I don't think anything else can bring him closer than that. I remember when I was younger, I got my hands on MVP Baseball 2005... I loved baseball back then but never really followed a team consistently or watched many games... I'm from New York and I hated the Yankees back then, so it was a no-brainer to pick the Mets, but that doesn't change the fact that Pedro Martinez was the only Met I could name.

Anyway, I started a "Dynasty Mode" (equivalent to Association mode in NBA or Franchise mode in The Show) with the Mets, and after roughly 1 season in-game, I had learned the entire roster, and grown a strong connection with the team, both in-game and in real life. I ended up watching the entire 2006 season and I haven't looked back since.

So the summary of all those words is that once you decide on a team, start an association with them, or even a MyCareer and get yourself drafted by them... and see where that takes you.

You could also watch some archived games, but I have no idea where you'd find such a thing... best playoff season I ever saw was the year where Sacremento played LA in the West Conf... and Robert Horry did what Robert Horry did. I think that was like 2003?

The NBA Finals between the Lakers and the Celtics (2007-20010 I think, but I'm not sure) were all really good, although I only liked the result of one of them

And finally, of course, if there is a sports team in your area, you could go to some games, but that's really only fun if you a) have a strong connection for the team or b) get someone to go with you that will make it a memorable time. Randomly going by yourself, to see a team you know nothing about, and sitting in the 80th row somewhere, is hardly a mind-blowing experience.

I'm gonna make some changes to BringTheHeat's list because I think its a little off:

                            Proven Championship Contenders:

                            Oklahoma City Thunder
                            San Antonio Spurs

                            Unproven Contenders:
                            New York Knicks
                            Los Angeles Clippers
                            Memphis Grizzlies

Teams On The Verge of Contention:

They are clones defensively, and defensively only.

I checked most of the teams... and you can check for yourself... Again, BringTheHeat's list is solid.
Those statistics more so prove my point than they don't. 8th worst to 2nd worst? 4th to 11th in differential? Keep in mind the Pacers are without their leading scorer from last year. Also the two teams just played each other on the 31st and Indy won.

My point still stands. From a player personnel and style of the teams standpoint, they're about as close as any two teams can get. Not to mention they both win and are top 4 in their conference.

wwharton - The OP asked who the best and worst teams are. We're just arguing it.

I don't really have anything else to add to the discussion. He didn't mention anything about following a particular team, just about following the sport, otherwise I'd give him advice on picking a team. But for now.. I'll say just continue to watch and you'll learn it eventually. And maybe even find your favorite team in the process.

                                Indiana Pacers
                                Indiana Hoosiers
                                Notre Dame Fighting Irish
