Maybe because dunk contest isn't as prestigious anymore? Just a hypothesis.

Re: why has the dunk contest become so poor?

The NBA dunk contest, or any dunk contest, is still exciting however, when the well known players who frequently appear on Sportscenter's top-ten for in-game dunks (Lebron, Westbrook, etc) aren't generally competing, the League's contest can appear to lose prestige. People still get excited for a dunk contest. Terrance Stansburry, who competed often in the late 80's did a Statue of Liberty 360 in like every contest he competed in--and it was awesome every time. 'Nique always did similar windmills and pumps; again, always awesome. The issue is that none of the objectively measurable aspects of the dunk are being considered in the scoring. Thus, we are inundated with theatrics and pageantry or guys trying extremely difficult dunks (eg 2013 contest) and missing many attempts and then doing less stellar dunks or losing points due to the difficulty of those dunks.

In The age of the Social Media/Internet Star Players don't want to ruin their Rep if they end up loosing in the Dunk Contest to a nobody. It's not like the old days where guys did just for the sake of competing. Could you imagine the Media fall out if a guy like Lebron lost to Wesley Johnson in a dunk contest? It would be a media frenzy and the Star players don't want that.

The only way were ever going to see a star studded dunk contest again is if there is some true incentive to participating other than the Trophy. Even then it will never be as good as back in the day. As Much as We would want to see Blake and Lebron duel it out in a contest for the ages it won't happen. The days of seeing matchups like Erving/Thompson or Jordan/Wilkins are long gone.
