    Re: Why charlotte....

Charlotte is a corporate crowd, they have a ton of banks there that will buy tickets to use for business reasons and it helps them when it comes to taxes!! I went to school there for 4 years and I might be one of the few who was actually interested in the games when I went!!

Oh well good luck to Bob's Cats, they will need it!! By the way, what is the definition of a "small market" team??

Like a city that is not one of the top 20 or so markets. E.g. New York is #1, LA #2, Chicago is #4, etc. I think a small market like a 30-40, would embrace a team, like Green Bay did with the Packers. just a thought...

They did have a very nice fanbase, but the owners alienated the fans, and the city.

                        Re: Why charlotte....

It's a similar situation to when the original Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore and became the Ravens. The city of Cleveland wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of footing the bill for a brand new stadium for the Browns. So Art Modell and company packed up and moved to Baltimore. The NFL realized that Cleveland was one of it's best markets and thus promised to put a team there once they got the stadium situation fixed. The only reason LA doesn't have a team is due to the lack of a modern NFL stadium.

What went on in Cleveland is basically what played out in Charlotte. Charlotte refused to build a new arena for the Hornets basically because of the owners George Shinn and Ray Woolridge. The owners of the Hornets weren't exactly popular guys in Charlotte and when they announced the team was moving to New Orleans, obviously the fan support was going to decrease. Actually the Hornets the year prior applied to move to Memphis the same day the Vancouver Grizzlies applied to move to Memphis. Ray Woolridge one of the ownvers of the Hornets is from Memphis. Now in all fairness to the owners of the Hornets, the Charlotte Coliseum was never built with the NBA in mind. That arena was on the drawing board long before Charlotte was awarded an expansion franchise in 1988. That arena was built primarily to host the ACC tournament, NCAA tournaments, and Final Fours. Basically the Hornets' owners were behing the eightball from the get go.

The reason they're putting a team back in the area is becasue Charlotte has a HUGE corporate community. There are numerous Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Charlotte and that's not counting the Big 3 banks like Bank of America. Compared to other possible expansion cities other than Las Vegas, Charlotte makes the most sense. With new ownership I think Charlotte will easily support the new team.

The ironic part about cities like Houston, Cleveland, and Charlotte is that they all lost teams but later got teams back. If they had each built a stadium/arena the first go around, they would've saved millions of dollars in construction cost. When the Oilers left Houston, the city of Houston could've built a brand new NFL Stadium for under 300 million. By waiting a few years, the tab on the stadium and expansion fees owed to the NFL was nearly 800 million. Orlando refuses to build an arena for the Magic. Sooner or later somethings going to have to give. Either the team gets a new arena or they move to another city.

Shinn wanted a new arena, the city didn't. Shinn whined like a baby and lied about attendence so the league would approve a move.

Had the league forced Shinn to resign or whatever and someone else stepped in for him the Hornets would still be here and the fans would be back in the seats, and a new arena may not be far off. Shinn is a greedy little horny leprechaun (sp?).
