New delay of game rule after a score basket.

This rule is mystery to me. After a made basket an offensive player is not allowed to touch the ball or the team is called for a delay of game. After a second time this happens the team gets a technical foul and the other team gets a free throw.

What or who is this rule supposed to protect? After watching a couple of games this season it takes longer for a team to inbound the ball if an offensive player is under the basket and isn't allowed to give the ball to the other team or the referee immediately.

Also, stopping the game and calling a delay of game actually delays the game longer then just having a player pass the ball to the referee.
Not to mention the time a technical free throw takes.

In addition, letting the other team get a free point just seems absurd to me.

I think it's supposed to protect teams that want to get out and run after a made basket, allowing his team to get back on defense.

Problem is a lot of times the player is just tapping the ball back to the other team out of habit.

They have gone overboard with it obviously. The only way it should ever be called is if a player is obviously trying to slow the other team down and is grabbing the ball constantly...

It's always been the rule just never enforced. I think once the season gets going they'll start only calling it when it's egregious. I don't think it's realistic to tell players not to touch a ball that falls in their hands lol

this rule is a complete joke to me.

its designed to make the game "quicker" but all it does is add more time stoppage for technicals.

not to mention they only call it randomly...2 straight plays the O player can touch the ball after a made basket and they will call 1, none, or both randomly

-my BIGGEST issue is that you can tap the ball with ur finger, causing no "re-pathing" of the ball and get called for it, but after a dunk blake griffin can punt the ball 10 rows deep and its perfectly fine (yea, he does it on purpose watch it in slow mo, he tee's it up)

Re: New delay of game rule after a score basket.

The rule is intended to keep teams from slowing the offense down when teams are getting delay of game calls for passing the ball back to the official or to the inbounder for the other team, which in turn, slows the game down.

There was actually a moment in the Mavs/Rockets game from the other night when there was actually a play that could've legitimately been a delay of game call but they didn't call it.

Re: New delay of game rule after a score basket.

With the amount of times they've called it so far this season they better continue to enforce it forever - none of this, "It's a point of emphasis this year but we're only going to call it for a few weeks and then completely ignore it" nonsense that usually happens. I'm all for it if they keep enforcing it, eventually the scoring team will adjust and never touch the ball which is a good thing IMO.

Also, the amount of travels being called is brutal. The NBA is enforcing the wrong kind of travels, stop letting guys take 3.5 steps when finishing, I don't care about people shuffling their feet or picking up their pivot foot a split second before dribbling. Seriously, so far this season the NBA has called that more frequently than college or HS refs have ever called it.

Exactly Ehh. They're calling it all the time now and its super inconsistent. They're making these calls which are based off split second timing, these refs don't have the vision to call this unless its blatant. And i've seen them miss blatant calls and then call it on a legal play.
The one against Melo in the Bulls game was bull****. They should crack down on the 3+ steps dudes are taking not this... unless its blatant of course.

They've called the walk on Melo's baseline spin from the block twice now, once vs Chicago and once vs the Wolves. I couldn't tell if either was a walk but that's one of the rare cases where travelling isn't giving the offense an advantage, yet letting guys take 3.5 steps which is a HUGE advantage when finishing still goes uncalled.

I always said it would make the game even more boring to watch if they called everything. I guess the people asking for it the last few years. Got what they wanted.

atleast it's not turned into the NCAA where you get called for a foul by breathing on someone on the perimiter..

but yall are right, the "shuffle" travle gives LITTLE advantage compared to the 3-4 step walk 15 feet down the lane for a layup
