I don't think it's an honor or an insult, it is what it is.. I just don't feel that players who are franchise carrying, and leading scoring capable players are role players.. That's just my opinion on it..

Joe Dumars for example, what exactly was his role... The teams best defender and leading scorer? I just don't consider that a role player, he's a go-to player.. If that makes sense..

Though I do think you can still be an All-Star caliber player, and even HOFer and still be a role player.. Guys like Cheeks and Jackson who's role was to handle the ball and facilitate, they weren't even a top 5 scoring option nor the focal point of their teams.. Same with Unseld, though he won an MVP award he was never a big time scorer or even defender.. Just a tough player, great rebounder, and team leader..

It's not an insult. But if we were going by your definition then guys like Jason Kidd, Mitch Ritchmond, Chris Webber, and Charles Barkley would also be considered role players...

Gotta disagree with Marion and Odom being role players solid list though.

Webber and Barkley never played hard without the ball. Richmond routinely had the ball pointed at him. Kidd was always controlling the ball.

Role players go long stretches without touching the ball and focus on their man to man defense, making quick team passes, and making hard cuts.

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer to what a role player is but I don't agree with how you put it. So if a player like Mark Jackson isn't a role player because he controlled the ball often, then what is he considered?

Role players are guys who can totally dominate a ballgame without ever touching the ball. Mark Jackson was a point guard who routinely overhandled and overpenetrated. His favorite move was to back his man into the paint.

I really can't agree with that. Just because a guy has the ball in his hands doesn't mean he's not good role player. It just means his role is to run the offense.

Yeah I agree. I can't see guys like Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen, DeAndre Jordan and Chris Bosh as just 'role players'. I like to define role players similarly to what NBA 2K has in Association mode- guys that aren't the 1st, 2nd or 3rd best player on the team that enter the game for limited stretches and have a strict role; either defending, catch and shoot, rebounding, provide some instant offense, etc.
Take GSW for instance. Outside of the starting 5, I would consider Draymond Green (defense), Steve Blake (facilitating, 3 pt), Speights and Jermaine O'Neal (rebounding/defense) as the role players. I'm not sure what I would consider Barnes, perhaps 6th man? though I would say could be considered a role player as well but he kind of does a little bit of everything.

The truly great role-playing point guards will make a simple wing pass, cut through the middle, and then reemerge on the other side of the defense and get to other actions.
Guys like Mark Jackson play with the ball on a string and inhibit the talents of their teammates.

That's just how different offenses run. Not every offensive system consists of PGs swinging the ball and cutting to open spots. I'm starting to think you just hate MJax lol.

I would probably define role players similarly except that I don't think they have to play in limited stretches. Doesn't Tony Allen start and play most of the game? I consider him a defensive role player. Also I think of DeAndre as one because he mostly just defends, rebounds and finishes easy ones.
I would also consider a player that does a little of everything as a role player. It's their role to come in and give anything they've got. Players like Draymond or PJ Tucker.

Nice post, but the team I cam up with after a little thinking off of this nba season is this

PG: Shaun Livingston / Patty Mills / Ramon Sessions

SG: Randy Foye / Tony Allen

SF: Danny Green / Matt Barnes / Dorell Wright

PF: Jason Thompson / Luis Scola / Ryan Anderson

                          C: Omer Asik
