    HOLY CROW!

I knew Hubie was old but I didn't know he was 70!

....and they say older coaches can't relate to young NBA players. HAH!

      From the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

      April 21, 2004

Brown is the NBA's Coach of the Year.

And according to his players, was there any doubt?

"He's been the whole key to our success," guard Bonzi Wells said. "Coach Brown has been on our backs from day one, at least ever since I've been here. He's an excellent teacher. He has taught me so much in the short time I've been here. It has been great for my career.

"It was definitely a no-brainer. There might have been some other coaches who were also deserving, but in my eyes he's the Coach of the Year."

Brown, 70, beat out Utah coach Jerry Sloan, and will be presented with the award this afternoon during a press conference.

"I never know how the NBA is going to work but he deserves it," point guard Jason Williams said. "It says a lot about the whole organization and a lot about him. He gives us a lot of the credit for winning but he's got to take some of the credit too."

Brown led the Grizzlies to a 50-win regular season and their first playoff appearance. After finishing with a 50-32 record in the regular season, the Grizzlies became the ninth team in history to record 50 wins the season after experiencing 50 losses.

Memphis ended last season with a 28-54 mark.

"It would be controversial if he didn't win it," center Lorenzen Wright said. "Everybody would have said he was cheated. Even all of the coaches in the NBA know he deserves it. Even though we're not playing well right now, it's a great accomplishment."

Brown received Coach of the Month honors for February and March after the Grizzlies manufactured records of 10-3 and 13-2. Their 13 wins in March were a franchise record.

"He flat-out deserves it with the job he did this year," guard Mike Miller said. "The bottom line is he's Coach of the Year and no one else deserved it more than him."

This is the second time Brown has won the league's coaching honor. He was named Coach of the Year in 1978 while guiding the Atlanta Hawks.

"He has turned around a franchise that knew futility and embarrassment, into a playoff team," swingman Shane Battier said. "It's because of Coach Brown."

Listen, this choice was a no-brainer. Hubie has TREMENDOUS upside, can play either the 1 or the 2, can score or distribute. I don't think it was too much of a REACH at this spot for them.
