I think it was definitely something they lacked. It just didn't matter because they were beating teams by playing true team basketball.

Billups could always hit the big shot, and Sheed could usually get a look inside. But they didn't have the attack type of player. Obviously all worked out without having that type of player, but I always wonder just how much better they could have been.

Because even without him, they still made it to back to back Finals(including being 12 mins away from repeating)and still went to 3-4 straight ECFs as well.
6 straight. They definitely would have been better set going Carmelo over Wade. Rip did well enough as their starting 2. They literally could have had an All-Star starting 5.

        Multiple championships for that group?
This is actually a topic for which I very much agreed with Bill Simmons in his book. We can imagine Dwyane going to Detroit just for the sake of hypotheticals but in reality, Dwyane and Chris (Bosh) were not even in the picture. It was Carmelo or Darko for Detroit and that was it. Those two and LeBron were locks as top 3 guys.

Subsequently, I think Simmons hit the nail on the head regarding Anthony. With Tayshaun coming off a hero's run in the 2003 playoffs (after a meteoric rise), there'd undoubtedly been an issue between those two splitting time. One would probably have to go. Then Larry Brown, forever a fan of rookies (sarcasm), would have lost one of his more versatile defenders in exchange for a guy who's going to try to want to do him, perhaps at the expense of the team. I could not see a Larry Brown/Melo matchup turning out well in that scenario.

Wade, I feel, is a fun thing to think about but again, it would have never happened for an overabundance of reasons, many involving Detroit just acquiring and signing Rip and Chauncey a year earlier.

I felt the starting 5 had great chemistry together, and Prince helped mold their defense into the best in the league.

I just feel that with adding Melo you have an instant focal point of the offense type of player. Which is the counter to what won them a championship.

I think Wade would have handled being a 6th, 7th man type of player for his first couple seasons. And he was just instant balls to the wall energy. I mean he was flash, constant attack mode and maximum defense. I think he would have fit their "system" better. Especially since in his youth he could play as a playmaker as well.

Grabbing Wade was unlikely, but the only backup SG they had at that time was Sura wasn't it? They usually got stuck with Hunter or Mike James in combination with Billups anytime Rip wasn't in.. If I remember correctly. I don't even know if Sura was on the playoff roster.

I mean looking back it's obvious why they took Darko, and if they took Melo I doubt they win a championship... It's just interesting knowing what we know now, because it seems like Wade could have instantly fit what they wanted. Assuming he could play a reserve role.

Ha, forgot about Larry Brown and his "love" of Rookies when he coached, lol.

Sura was dealt as a part of the '04 deadline deal for Rasheed Wallace. But yeah, all the things just worked out wrong for the Pistons regarding their Darko pick. It came right in the midst of that era of "Euro-Discovery', where everyone thought they realized the lesser knowns from other continents were all due to become Nowitzkis or Stojakovics. And the Pistons' void seemed so clear and obvious, and they had a free pick (they were conference finalists the year before), and early returns on Darko were so glowing, that it seemed to make the most sense to try to complete that starting unit with a much needed big man.

Wade playing a reserve role would have been interesting. I wonder how he'd have developed in that case and I wonder how it would have worked to have three players that talented rotating through. Hamilton couldn't even handle sharing time with Ben Gordon many years later. Meanwhile, Lindsey Hunter and Mike James were actually pretty incredible backups. Knew their roles and they were hounds.

Watching last night, it was really funny watching Hakeem and Bowie dribble. When they were in transition, they would just slap at the ball like all of the coaches always teach you not to do nowadays. It was really surprising seeing that from Hakeem considering how ridiculously skilled he was.

I cant even imagine how different the nba would be today and through the past 30 years had the thought process been to take the big at the time.

What if the draft were in todays mindset and MJ goes to houston O.o

Hakeem would have probably went first regardless of what the mindset was. Jordan was a freak athlete but he wasn't really allowed free reign, nobody knew what he could really do. Hakeem was the most sought after bigman drafted for awhile, he was pretty much dominant.

Man, finally in a house with NBA TV and I pop in during the last 20 minutes or so of the doc. I really liked what I saw regarding Rick Carlisle and Dan Trant. I'm glad they appeared to have gone much deeper than the superstar angle.

How bout this. Let's say the Rockets traded Ralph Sampson to Portland for the 2nd pick in the draft. Then still take Hakeem number one and then take Jordan number two.

If Sampson could have stayed healthy I think that duo could have won a ring or two. Especially towards the end of the 80's when their matchup would have been Detroit.. Sampson was a freak, that big playing PF.
