Why didn't teams do this?
With all this money being spent on average or even mediocre players, I wonder this. Why didn't any of these teams doing this draft an experienced player in the draft?? You could have gotten a player with the same skills for 1/10th of the salary cost?? I really don't think that Okur is that much better than some of the college players that came out that can contribute now!Tags: None -
Re: Why didn\'t teams do this?
I agree that the money is huge but Okur is going to be a very solid pickup. In his two years with Detroit he did a great job. Larry Brown and Okur did not mesh with thier play styles. Okur is a typical Euro who has a great outside shot. LB wanted to pound the ball inside and that left Okur outside looking in.
I am not saying he is better than everyone in the draft, who knows at this point. He is very young though and has already proven that he can play at this level.
Out of all the players getting crazt contracts I think he is best bet in the long run.
The problem is these teams have cap space but there are not really any superstars to give the money too so they have to go to the next best thing.
Okur in Utah will be fine, some of hte other stuff is mind boggling. I thought Okur would get about 7 mil per but once Pheonix went out and overpaid for NAsh everyone seems to be following suitActually...believe it or not from my physique... I'm a light eater - Clay T. Shaver -

Re: Why didn\'t teams do this?
What forward/center came in the draft at #14 and #16 with college experience and better than Okur? Plus, Okur has CHAMPIONSHIP experience. Once you're a piece of a championship team, you're set for life.
Okur got paid because he is a restricted free agent. If Utah had any hopes of signing Okur, they needed to tender an offer that they knew Detroit would not and could not match.NBA 2K18 ratings for several seasons generated from advanced analytics using the SportsCrunch system:

I actually think not so much that you can get experienced college players who can do the same job, but rather you can get cheap veteran free agents who can do the same job, especially in Foyle's case. All he does is rebound and block shots, and there are enough center free agents out there who also do just that, like Steven Hunter. Personally, I might have gone after Keon Clark, because he is definitely worth that amount of cash, and he rebounds and block shots and more.
For one year, Mullin and Foyle were teammates, and Mullin tends to stick with guys he knows.NBA 2K18 ratings for several seasons generated from advanced analytics using the SportsCrunch system:

I agree...Hunter and Clark can be had for less than the MLE...Chris Anderson has sick hops can block shots like crazy for a guy who doesn't get much PT and he can score...He'd probably get a bit more than the minimum, but i'd bet his production per 40 minutes would be better than Foyles.Comment
