The ring isn't a sure thing anymore, so GP is doing his best Sheed impression and telling the Lakers to cut the check.

Re: Now GP wants the team to buy out his contract
Gp has been telling everyone who listens that last seasons mediocre performance was a result of Phil Jackson's stubborn Triangle Offense. Payton is telling people that if he were to play as the captain of a fastbreak offense that he would would put up near-alstar numbers. R.T. claims that he wants to be uptempo and do a lot of running.
This could be a thinly veiled attempt to get a slight raise , and probably stay with the Lakers because the his market value is probably higher then his current contract in this inflated market. It will get real interesting if for example a bad team with caproom offers to overpay himComment

Should the Shaquille O'Neal trade to Miami go through, as expected, you can safely expect Gary Payton to seek his own escape from the Lakers.
League sources told ESPN.com on Sunday night that Payton will push this week for a buyout of his contract if the Lakers complete the proposed trade with the Heat that would bring Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, Caron Butler and a future first-round pick to Los Angeles.
Payton, sources said, has serious reservations about what the Lakers can achieve without a recognized power player joining them in O'Neal's place. Without O'Neal, sources added, Payton has lost the teammate who lured him to Los Angeles. Lakers sources, however, indicated that the club would be reluctant to let Payton go without compensation.
