Blazers President and General Manager Bob Whitsitt announced today that the team has signed Center Arvydas Sabonis to a multi-year deal. Per team policy the terms of the agreement were not released.
“We are very excited to have Arvydas back in the Blazers family,” said Whitsitt. “Sabas has been a big part of our success in the past and we are looking forward to having him back on the court.”
Sabonis, who played six seasons with the Blazers between 1995 and 2001, has decided to re-join the team after taking a season off. Sabonis spent last year in Spain with his family.
“We are glad to have him back,” said Blazers Head Coach Maurice Cheeks. “His skills and experience make him a great addition to our team. I have seen him play over the years and I am excited to have the opportunity to work with him.”
The 7-3 Lithuanian center was a member of the Blazers teams that played in back-to-back Western Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000. Sabonis averaged 10.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.02 blocks per game while appearing in 61 games for the Blazers during the 2000-2001 season. During his six-year career with Portland, Sabonis averaged 13.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Sabonis ranks fifth in Blazers history in defensive rebounds (2,455) and eighth in blocked shots (422).
