An Alternative To The Age Limit Idea

I remember reading something on si.com about the current collective bargining agreement expiring at the end of this up and coming season. So I'm sure the league and the Players Association are trying to come up with an agreement to avoid another lockout. One of the issues sure to come up is the age limit idea to control the amount of young players coming into the league. Which from what I read majority of those in the Player's Association seem to disagree with. Here's my suggestion to what they can do that would make both the Player's Association and the league happy.

I think the NBA should do something similar to what baseball has. In baseball a high school senior can enter it's draft, but if he chooses to go to college then he can't enter the draft until after he has at least finished his junior year of college. The only change that I would make to this is cutting it down to a player's sophmore year for the NBA because I think the Player's Association may see 3 years as being too long. You also have players like Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd, Elton Brand, Baron Davis, and Chris Webber, who only played two years of college ball and became solid players.

The players that have the ability to make an instant impact straight out of high school like Lebron James and Amare Stoudamire would still be allowed in the draft if they want to enter it. However, if a player decides to go to college(Meaning he signs a letter of intent to attend college.) he is not allowed in the draft until after he completes sophmore year. If this rule in place for this years draft only Dwight Howard would be the only high school kid in the draft. Shaun Livingston, Sebastian Telfar, Robert Swift, Al Jefferson, Dorrell Wright, Josh Smith, and J.R. Smith
would not since they all pretty much from what I read signed letters of intent to attend college. Dwight Howard did not.

In my opinion, this rule would control the amount of players leaving early better than the age limit. What do you guys think?

They won't like it because your idea excludes the Carmelo Anthony types from future drafts.

I think what other people have suggested similar to baseball is instating a farm system, which I have yet to see any decent suggestions why it shouldn't be done.

True, but it wouldn't exclude Lebron James types. Also, if this rule was in place last year Carmelo would have been in this year's draft. You think the Magic still would have taken Dwight Howard or even Emeka Okafor number 1 over Carmelo?

this would stop more kids from going to college for just one year, but you will still see too many high school seniors going out for the draft, and teams being forced to draft on potential, you don't want to be the team that passed up on a possible star

I say you must have two years of college before entering the "L".

You dont think this idea of yours would cause MORE high school players to enter the draft?

Sure, you talk about all these rookies signing letters of intent for college this year but I bet you they wouldn't have if your rule was in place.

Re: An Alternative To The Age Limit Idea

Well I look at it like this. Let's use this year's high school senior class for example because a lot of people have said that it is a strong class. Out of the top 50 players in the nation 8 declared for the draft. Howard, Livingston, Wright, Telfair, Jefferson, Swift, J.R. Smith, and Josh Smith which leaves 42 of that top 50 going to college for 2 years.

Fast forward to 2006 when those 42 players would be able to enter the draft if the want to. Lets say 10 of those 42 players decide to enter the draft. I think that group of college sophmore will be stronger than the high school class for that year and more of them would be taken ahead of any high school player coming out that year unless there is a Lebron type in the class of 06. Because teams would have seen these players play and dominate for 2 years and know that they are really to play and their potiential is just as great if not greater than the high school players coming out.

The real impact of my rule would be in 2007 when that group of 32 players that decided to return for their junior year decide to enter the draft. Let's say 10 out of that group decide enter the draft that year. Also, lets say that years college sophmore class coming out is pretty strong. Again, teams would have gotten a chance to see these guys play for 2 and 3 years and get better along the way.

The goal of my rule is to make the class of college players in the draft so strong that their upside and potiential as a group is greater than any high school class of players coming upside and potiential. Unless that year's particular high school class is full of Lebron James types.

I think if you are not selected in the top 10 then you have to go to college for two years. There are gonna be a few busts this year.

I don't have a problem with making them go to college for 4 years. Not to many hospitals hire kids right out of high school to be surgeons no matter how smart they are. Its obvious these 18 year olds don't know how to play basketball at the NBA level ie (Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Jonathan Bender). Watching the olympic games I question Lebron and Carmelo's ability to play team basketball.
